Big Hands and Storylines:
Gold Goes Home
Jamie Gold was eliminated when he pushed his short stack all-in over two limpers. The first limper called and the second raised all-in for an additional 4,000. The initial raiser was priced into the call and the three turned over:
Gold: 6 5
Initial Limper: 7 6
Pre-flop caller: 8 8
The board was dealt K T 4 Q A and Gold was sent to the rail.
Batista Crippled
An early position raiser made it 1,800 to go, and got two callers, the cutoff and the button. After the small blind folded, Chad “lilholdem954” Batista moved all-in for 30,000 in the big blind. Two folds ensued, but the third player made the call. Batista turned over 2 2 to the shock of the table, and his opponent revealed Q Q . The flop of 7 5 3 left Batista needing a deuce or runner-runner straight to win the pot, but the turn and river were the 8 and 9 . Batista’s stack was reduced to 11,000.
“Fossilman” Doubles Up
On a flop of J 8 4 , Greg Raymer check-raised all-in – about 7,500 chips – and his opponent thought for a brief time and called. Raymer flipped up T 9 for an open-ended straight draw and back-door flush draw while his opponent had K 4 for a fairly meager bottom pair and back-door flush draw. The 7 on the turn ended the suspense and doubled Raymer up to 18,000.

Big Hands:
Allen Cunningham Builds His Stack
After calling a raise in the big blind from a middle position player, Allen Cunningham checked a J T 6 flop. His opponent bet, and he called. The 4 on the turn caused Cunningham to bet, and his opponent elected to fold. The pot boosted Allen’s stack to just under 15,000.
Hoyt Corkins Remains Aggressive
Hoyt Corkins accumulated a total stack of over 10,000 in chips by utilizing his aggressive style during the limit round. On one hand, Corkins raised pre-flop from early position and was flat called by the opponent on his left. The two players saw a flop of 6 4 3 . Corkins bet, his opponent raised, Corkins reraised, and his opponent finally called. Hoyt followed through by betting the K on the turn, generating a fold from his opponent.
E-Dog Stays Healthy
Erick Lindgren took down a pot worth over 1,000 in the final minutes of the last no limit round by snapping his opponents’ bluff on a board of K Q 9 3 2 . Lindgren flipped over the A Q and his opponent mucked his A J face up. Lindgren now has over 10,000 in chips.
Cory Carroll and Andrew Robl
During the second level of limit play, Cory Carroll raised from the cutoff and was re-raised by Andrew Robl on the button. Carroll called, and the dealer laid out a flop of 6 8 9 . Carroll checked, Robl bet, Carroll check-raised, Robl three-bet, Carroll four-bet to a total of 800, and Robl called. The turn brought the K , Carroll bet 400, Robl raised him yet again, and Carroll called. The 5 appeared on the river, and once again Carroll led out only to be raised by Robl. Carroll called, and Robl flipped over A 7 . Carroll mucked, and Robl takes down a juicy pot.
The Takeover Begins
Nick “The Takeover” Schulman recently joined table 1, joining Vanessa Russou, David Chu and John Hennigan. It took little time before Schulman and Rousso tangled. On a board of K 9 8 , Rousso checked to Schulman, who tossed a purple 500 chip across the line. Rousso folded, leaving her with over 12,500. After that hand, Schulman had just under 10,000.
Table 24 Remains Tough
Dewey Tomko has taken Daniel Negreanu’s spot next to Bill Edler, Isabelle Mercier, and Doyle Brunson.
The Magician Makes Some Chips Disappear
In the big blind, Antonio Esfandiari called a pre-flop raise from a middle position player. The flop was J 10 8 , prompting Esfandiari to bet and be raised all in by the initial aggressor. Esfandiari called with Q J , having his opponent well covered. His opponent flipped up two black kings, and the 7 turn, 5 river failed to improve Esfandiari. He now has just over 5,000 in chips.
Jeff Madsen Gets Caught
Facing a raise to 325 from the button during the no limit round, Jeff Madsen opted to defend his big blind. Both players checked the J 6 7 flop, but Madsen led out with 450 on the 9 turn. His opponent raised an additional 700, and Madsen called. The river brought the 8 . Madsen fired 2,300, and his opponent called. Madsen announced that he had missed his draw and turned over the A 9 . His opponent revealed his 8 5 , and his straight was good for the pot.

Hand #16: Cory Carroll Eliminated in 4th Place ($593,645)
Apr 26, '08
Hand #16 - David Chiu has the button in seat 3, and there is no small blind. Hansen raises from the cutoff to 480,000, Carroll reraises from the big blind to 1.65 million, and Hansen thinks for a bit before he calls. The two chipleaders apparently aren't afraid to mix it up in a big pot.
The flop comes Q J 6 , Carroll checks, and Hansen stands up to get a better look at Carroll's chip stack across the table. After about two minutes of thinking with a pained expression on his face, Gus Hansen moves all in, and the crowd gasps.
Carroll looks surprised, but he takes his time, rechecking his cards and taking a close look at his own chip stack. If he calls and wins, he would be a dominant chipleader with 15 million, but if he loses, he's out of the tournament in fourth place. If he folds, he'll still have a little less than 6 million in chips, which is still a solid second on the leaderboard. Carroll seems to be studying everything but his opponent -- he only gives occasional glances Hansen's way.
Several times, it looks like Carroll has come to a decision, but then he continues thinking. He's definitely not Hollywooding it here.
Carroll finally calls all in for 6,925,000, and the crowd gasps. Carroll shows A J for a pair of jacks. Hansen shows 7 5 for a diamond flush draw, and he'll need to improve to bust Carroll here.
The turn is the Q , and Carroll is still in the lead with two pair. Hansen needs any diamond but the queen (which would give Carroll a full house) to win the pot.
The river card is -- the 3 !
The crowd screams as Gus Hansen rivers a diamond flush to win the biggest pot of the tournament.
Cory Carroll made the right call but got the wrong result, and he is eliminated in fourth place, earning $593,645.

Hour One Recap
Jul 14, '07
Day five started like any other day in this year's Main Event, slow and steady. The comfortable pace didn't last long however and play has progressed to a pace that can only be described as chaotic. Since the first "all in and a call" cry came from a dealer, a plethora of all ins and bust outs followed. The field is down to 105 players and having a million in chips is no longer such a big deal. The day started in level 20 with blinds of $10,000-$20,000 and a $3,000 ante. This blind level is significant because now every big blind represents the buy in of one player in this year's Main Event.
Scotty Nguyen Baby
The fast pace of play has benefited some players, one of which has been crowned the champion of the Main Event before. Scotty Nguyen has built his stack to over $2,000,000 in the first hour of play and did so at the expense of Cory Carroll. Nguyen raised to $104,000 under the gun and Carroll was the only caller. The flop came A 9 7 and both players checked. The turn was the 5 and Nguyen fired out $125,000. Carroll counted out the appropriate amount and threw it into the middle to call. The river brought the Q and Nguyen led out with a $300,000 bet. Carroll bumped it up to $750,000 total and put Nguyen in a decision for almost all of his chips. Nguyen counted out the $450,000 extra and had only $120,000 more. "I call" said Nguyen and showed Q Q . Carroll exposed A Q and realized that the river had not helped him like he had thought. Nguyen took down the massive pot and is now sitting with $2,100,000 in chips.
Chipleader Continues to Crush
Dag Martin Mikkelsen came into day five as the chip leader and now has $4,200,000 in chips. Only recently passed by Avi Cohen who has $4,700,000, Mikkelsen has been on a tear in the first hour of level 20. Mikkelsen picked up a cool $500,000 his opponent Chris Lovelace in the following hand. Mikkelsen raised to $60,000 and was reraised by Lovelace to $150,000. Mikkelsen reraised and Lovelace came back over the top all in for his last $400,000. Mikkelsen made the call and showed A K . Lovelace turned over 8 8 and was the slight favorite. The flop came J J 10 and Mikkelsen picked up several more outs. The turn was the 6 giving Mikkelsen the flush he was looking for. Lovelace was not out though with the possiblity of the full house still in the deck. The river brought the Q and gave Mikkelsen the royal flush to eliminate Lovelace. Seated at the featured table, Mikkelsen was happy to hear the roar of applause from the crowd when the Q hit on the river.
Who Wants to be a Millionaire?
Well obviously everyone wants to be a millionaire, but Bill Edler wants it to be official. Edler pushed all in before the flop for a little more than $400,000. His opponent in the four seat, Jimmy Blevins, called. Edler turned over Q J and Blevins had called with 5 5 . The flop came Q J 10 and Edler needed only to dodge two more cards to double up. The turn was the 2 and Edler looked comfortable. The river brought the 8 and Edler built his stack to $985,000. Edler's table broke after the hand and when asked his chip count in transit, Edler said he didn't know. "'Bout a million Bill?" asked a member of the media. "Don't give me a million yet. Not until it's official" replied Edler.
Chad Brown Crippled
Chad Brown limped into the pot and Richard Crowell pushed all in for $225,000 two seats to his left. Matt keikoan and Ken Smith both called and Brown was left with a decision. Brown eventually called and there were four players to the flop. The flop was K 4 2 and Smith checked. Brown bet out $200,000 and Keikoan got out of the way. Smith called the bet with his last $183,000 and the three remaining players turned over their cards. Crowell had pushed with 3 3 , Brown was holding 9 9 and Smith had called with J J . The turn was the 7 and the river brought the 7 , no help to any of the players. Smith's jacks held up and he collected the main pot and the side pot. Brown was left with only $315,000 after the hand.
Watkinson Chips Up
Julian Gardner raised to $60,000 from early position and Lee Watkinson was the only caller. The flop came K J 8 and Gardner bet out $80,000. Watkinson again made the call and the turn was the A . Gardner fired out $125,000 this time and again Watkinson smooth called. The river brought the 6 and both players checked. Gardner showed A 2 for top pair but Watkinson showed A Q and had him outkicked. Watkinson took down the pot and now has $1,700,000.
