James Akenhead Doubles Up James Akenheand moved all in preflop for 4,015,000 under the gun and Steven Begleiter made the call from middle position. Eric Buchman then reraised to 12 million total from the hi-jack and Begleiter got out of the way. The two live players then flipped over their cards: Akenhead: K Board: J Akenhead won the hand with a queen on the river and he doubled up to 12,855,000. Recent WSOP Europe Main Event champion Barry Shulman had a rough level 9, dropping to as low as 25,000 before bouncing back a bit when he eliminated high stakes regular David “viffer” Peat. Peat moved all in on the short stack from under the gun for his last 4,200 and was called by two unknowns and Shulman in late position. The flop came down 8-6-4 and Shulman made an isolation bet, getting heads-up with the all-in Peat. Peat showed 9-4 and needed help against Shulman’s 6-5. The turn was a 7, giving Shulman the straight but Peat a better straight draw, however the river was an Ace and Peat hit the rail. Shulman suffered the same fate, however, just moments before the end of the evening when his dominated ace fell to PokerStars Caribbean Adventure winner Poorya Nazari.
Marco Johnson got heads-up with an unknown players on a board reading J-J-7-K-K and was faced with a tough decision for his last 62,000. Johnson took his time as Phil Ivey, Barry Greenstein and Matt Stout looked on and finally made the call. His opponent showed ace high and Johnson scooped the pot with J-9 for the underfull. That pot boosted his stack to nearly 150,000 in chips. The button bets 3,000, Lex Veldhuis calls from the small blind, as does Philippe Dauteuil and the flop comes 6 Dauteuil is all in in the next hand and Andrew Lichtenberger ends his misery. He hits the rail with only 30 minutes left of play. Veldhuis struck again soon after, and this time Boris Becker was his victim. It was A-K-versus A-Q, and the best hand took the pot. Daniel Negreanu had pulled back to even and taken a small lead when the biggest hand of the tournament took place. With a flop of J Negreanu: Q Turn and River: J Negreanu made three jacks on the turn but it was topped when a third ace hit for Shulman on the river. Shulman doubled up to 8 million and Negreanu fell to 2 million. Final Hand of the Tournament: Negreanu moved the last of his chips in preflop and Shulman made the call. Their cards: Shulman: 10 Board: K Negreanu was eliminated in second place and he will take home £495,589 in prize money (making him the all-time money list leader). Shulman wins the 2009 WSOP Europe and he takes home the top prize of £801,603 along with the gold bracelet. Shulman now holds two gold bracelets for his career.
