Big Hands:
Ivey Makes Trips, Gets Paid
On the river, the first player checked and another player bet 1,250 with the final board reading A 6 9 4 6 . He was met with a raise from Phil Ivey, who made it 4,000.
The first player got out of the way and after a minute or so of contemplation, the original bettor made the call. Ivey rolled over the K 6 , making trips on the river and increasing his stack early.
Salley Stumbles a Bit Early
John Salley called a raise preflop as did several other players. The flop was K 7 10 and the small blind led out for 500. Salley called and so did the player on the button. The turn was the 8 and all three players checked.
The river was the K and the small blind bet 1,650. Salley called pretty quickly and the player on the button got out of the way. The small blind turned over K 3 and Salley double checked his cards a couple time before releasing his hand into the muck.
Tran Gives The Table a Sneak Peek
J.C. Tran bet 525 on a flop of A 10 9 when all the players checked to him. The player in the big blind called and the 10 fell on the turn.
The big blind checked and Tran bet 1,300. The big blind eventually folded and Tran allowed the big blind to pick which card he wanted to see. The big blind picked the right card as Tran showed him a 10.
Brad Berman Tripped Up
Five players limped preflop and the flop came down A J Q . Action was checked to seat 4 who fired 500 and only Brad Berman made the call from the small blind. The turn was the 6 and both players checked. The river was the Q and seat 4 bet 1,000 after Berman checked. Berman called and seat 4 showed K Q for trips and the pot. Berman was at 27,750.
You’re Still A Young Man
On a flop of K Q 8 , the player seat 2 bet 500 and Ryan Young raised to 1,500. Seat 2 called and the turn was the 2 . Seat 2 checked to Young who fired 5,000. Seat 2 called and the river was the 9 .
Both players checked and seat 2 tabled Q Q for a flopped set. Young mucked and was down to 43,000.
Elky Gets Turned Out
The player in seat 4 raised to 350 and seat 6 made the call. Bertrand Grospellier made the call as well from late position and the three players saw a flop of K 9 3 . Everyone checked and the A came on the turn. Seat 4 led out with 700 and seat 6 mucked. Grospellier made the call and the Q fell on the river. Both players checked again and seat 4 tabled A J for top pair and Grospellier mucked. He was at 28,000 after losing the hand.
Game Over For Super Dario
Dario Minieri was all in after a flop of 10 7 4 . Here were their cards.
Minieri: Q 10
Opponent: 9 6
Minieri had top pair but needed to dodge his opponent’s flush draw. The turn smacked Minieri as it was the J , making his opponent’s flush. Minieri still had outs as another diamond that wasn’t the 8 would make him a superior flush. But the river was the J and Minieri made an early exit from the 2009 main event.

Ben Straate Doubles Through the Master
Ben Straate was all in on the short stack with Q-10 against Men "The Master" Nguyen's pocket nines. Straate flopped two pair and then turned queens and jacks. Nguyen was looking for a straight card, but the river bricked, doubling Straate up to 65,000. Nguyen is now short stacked with 30,000.
Left In The Deck:
Al Barbieri Yells his Opinion
A shouting match recently erupted over at table 26 between Al "Sugar Bear" Barbieri and Ryan Young. Young was involved in a hand and asked his opponent, "You don't want to knock me out, do you?"
This table talk upset Barbieri who felt that Young was inducing a particular action with his words. Most of the table came to Young's defense and agreed he had done nothing wrong, but an irrate Barbieri continued the rant anyway. Tournament Director Matt Savage came over and agreed that Young never disclosed the contents of his hand and did nothing wrong. Order was restored and play continued, albeit with more tension than before.

After about a minute, Negreanu reraised most of his big chips and Turner called all in. Negreanu showed 5 3 for bottom two pair, but was almost drawing dead to Turner's top set of queens. The turn and river came 4 A and Negreanu was crippled down to just a few thousand. A few hands later, he was eliminated.
Alan Goehring Hits The Rail

This Post Cost 9,000 Chips
Oct 28, '08
Ryan Young is having a great time over at his table with Jonathan Little, Eric Liu, Danny Wong and Rhynie Campbell. On a recent hand he had a reporter sweat his hole cards. Young peaked at 9 3 and raised 6,000 preflop. An opponent raised to 15,000 and Young hesitated, but then decided to call. "Come on Card Player," said Young, as the flop was dealt Q 10 5 . Young checked, his opponent bet, and Young mucked his cards. "Man, that cost me 9,000," said Young after the hand.

Ryan Young Pulls A Huge Bluff

On a board of K 8 7 Q , Adam Gerber bet 20,000 from the big blind. Ryan Young then raised to 100,000. After deliberating for a minute, Gerber reraised to 220,000.
Young made the call fairly quickly and the river was the 4 . Gerber checked and Young instantly moved all in for 410,000. Gerber went deep into the tank, at one point picking up his stuffed dog to mull over his decision.
He counts out his stack and sees that if he is wrong, he will be crippled down to about 45,000 in chips. He states that he can beat a lot of hands, but can't beat 6-5, which is the nuts. He asks Young if he will show and Young doesn't say a word.
After a bit more thought, Gerber lays it down and Young shows his 10 9 for a busted open ended straight draw.

Big Hands:
The Flack and Esfandiari Show
Over at table 43 in the Brasilia Room, Layne Flack and Antonio Esfandiari are sitting right next to each other. The two were already very chatty with no one watching, but once the cameras arrived, the show began.
With Esfandiari in the big blind, Flack mucked his hand from under the gun. "If that hand flips over," Flack began. "Everything I've worked for with my reputation will go 'pffft'," he said as he signaled a thumbs down for the camera. Meanwhile, the player in seat 9 saw fit to raise Esfandiari's blind as he threw out 1,100 from the button. The small blind folded and "The Magician" repopped to 3,500. "Antonio is here to let you know that we do the raising around here," said Flack. Seat 9 caught the message and mucked his hand. This set up a very interesting battle on the next hand.
Action folded around to Esfandiari in the small blind and he raised to 1,000 straight. Layne Flack made the call from the big blind and the two players were heads up going to the flop. It came down A 5 5 . Esfandiari checked and Flack fired 1,000. After a call from Esfandiari, the turn came down with the Q . Esfandiari checked again and Flack bet 1,500. Esfandiari made another called and checked the river as the 9 fell. "Things are about to get ugly, dad!" Flack said into the camera before the river came. He then bet 4,000 and Esfandiari mucked. "I had it," Flack told "The Magician." Flack was at around 44,000.
Spinoff for Antonio
Esfandiari separated himself from Flack on the next hand as the player in seat 8 raised to 800. Esfandiari called from the button and Flack folded his small blind. The flop came down K Q 7 . Seat 8 fired a continuation bet of 1,200. "The Magician" went nowhere as he made the call and both players saw the 9 come on the turn. Seat 8 slowed down, checking to Esfandiari. He fired 3,300 into the pot and seat 8 disappeared from the hand. Esfandiari raked in the pot and he was around 80,000 in chips.
And Now, Back to Flack
Table 43 was then broken and both player were moved to different tables. But the two players were still within earshot of each other as Flack got involved in a hand.
Action folded around to the small blind who raised to 1,100 and Flack defended from the big blind. The flop K 10 3 and both players checked. The turn was the 10 , pairing the board. The small blind then fired 2,000 into the pot. Flack called and the river was the 5 . The small blind checked the third heart to Flack and he fired 6,000 into the middle. The small blind said, "Do you have the flush?" as he made the call. Flack shook his head and threw his hand into the muck. The small blind showed A 10 and he raked the pot.
Hevad Khan Picks Off a Huge Bluff
Khan raised to 800 from the cutoff and the player in seat 4 made the call from the big blind. The flop came 10 4 3 and the big blind checked to Khan. He fired 1,200 into the pot and the big blind check-raised to 2,800 total. Khan made a quick call and the A hit on the turn. The big blind fired 5,800 at the pot and sent Khan into the tank. He asked his opponent how many chips he had left (12,600). Khan then made the call after a few more moments of thought. The river was the J and the big blind actually tanked for three minutes on his own action before finally deciding check. Khan checked behind his opponent and the big blind mucked his hand. There was a debate at the table on whether Khan needed to show his hand. He eventually did, showing Q 10 for middle pair. He raked the pot and his stack was at 46,000 after the hand.
Ryan Young With a Shout Out
Three-handed and on a flop of 8 5 2 , Phil Gordon bet 1,700 and the player in seat 2 raised 4,500. Ryan Young then repopped to 11,000 total. Gordon mucked and seat 2 did as well after tanking for a few moments. Young looked up and said, "This is for Card Player," as he showed Q 8 for top pair.
Jesus Walks... Out
On a board reading A Q 7 3 , action was checked to Chris Ferguson. He fired 2,000 and one player called. The big blind folded and the river was the 6 . Ferguson pushed his last 3,000 into the middle and his opponent quickly called. Ferguson turned over 7 7 for a flopped set of sevens. They weren't so lucky, though, as his opponent showed K 6 for the nut flush on the flop. Ferguson stood up and made his exit from the main event.
The Legend Continues
Over at table 7 in the Brasilia Room, Tommy "Legend" Le eliminated one of his opponents as Le had a set of threes. It was good news and bad news for "Legend" as he brought his stack to 50,000 but he also saw the empty seat filled by Shane "Shaniac" Schleger.
With Allen and Leroy already eliminated today and Nam busting yesterday, Tommy "Legend" is the last of the Le brothers left in the 2008 WSOP main event.
Todd Brunson Shoots Down A Couple Of Cowboys
Preflop, an unfortunate opponent raised to 1,000, only to have Todd Brunson min raise behind him to a total of 2,000. The player then made the fourth bet, making it 5,000. Brunson ended the baby raising by making a man-sized shove all in for over 12,000. The player made the call, showing K K . He was crushed by Brunson's A A , which improved to a set by the river, the board running out Q 5 2 A J . The player was eliminated, and Brunson was up to 26,000 after the hand.
Shulman Takes Pot Without Showdown
Jeff Shulman raised to 900 from the button and was called by the player in the big blind. On a flop of J 5 2 , the big blind checked to Shulman, who bet 1,700. The big blind made the call and the Q fell on the turn. Both players checked, but when the 2 fell on the river the big blind bet 2,000. Shulman wasted little time raised to 4,500, sending the big blind into the tank. He eventually folded and Shulman took a pot containing around 5,000 in chips without showing down, boosting his stack to around 34,000.
Minieri Makes Big Laydown
Action was limped to Dario Minieri, who raised to 1,400 from middle position. Seat 6 and seat 4 called and action was checked to Minieri on a flop of A Q 5 . He bet 2,900 and only seat 6 called. The 7 came on the turn and Minieri slowed down, checking to seat 6 who bet 5,000. Minieri thought and said he put his opponent on A-Q. "That's the sickest fold of my life," Minieri said as he laid his hand down. His opponent didn't respond as he scooped the pot. Minieri said he folded A-K.
Sick Bluff From The Italian
Mid-way through the level Minieri was in a hand where his opponent bet 1,500 on the flop of A Q 7 . Minieri raised to 3,600 and his opponent called. The J s fell on the turn and Minieri moved all in. A camera crew swarmed the table as Minieri's opponent thought over his decision. The player eventually mucked and Minieri showed 2 5 for a huge bluff. After the hand Minieri sat with 19,000 in chips.
Micon Bets Out One Opponent, Eliminates Another
With the player in seat 9 all in and seat 4 also in the hand, Bryan Micon thought for a minute before re-popping it to 3,350. Seat 4 thought then mucked J J face up. It was a good laydown as Micon showed A A and was against the all in seat 9's 9 9 . The flop brought Q J 5 , which would've given seat 4 a set if he had stayed in the hand. The turn was the 4 , giving seat 9 a flush draw and more outs. But the 10 hit on the river and Micon eliminated a player and added to his chip stack.

Big Hands and Storylines:
Minieri Takes One Through the Heart
Dario Minieri was the button and limped into a pot that had four players see the flop come K J 2 . After three checks which included both blinds and the player in the cut-off, Minieri bet 625. The big blind and the cut-off called. The turn brought the K , pairing the board and bringing a flush into play. After two checks, Minieri bet 2200. The big blind folded and cut-off called. The river brought the 10 , putting a four-card flush on board. The cut-off checked and Minieri bet 3900. The cut-off simply called, worried about a full house and showed the nut flush, holding A 10 . Minieri mucked his hand and is down to 8325 in chips.
Shortly afterward, Minieri made back a few of his lost chips through aggressive positional play. He finished the level with just under 14,000 in chips.
The Lame Lame Show
On a flop of 10 6 3 with one player checking to him and three players to act after, Tom Schneider bet 2,000 into a pot of about 4,000. Cory Zeidman, to his left, moved all-in for 12,725 total. Action folded back around to Schneider who went into the tank. After apologizing for the table for taking so long, Schneider asked Zeidman, “What do you want me to do? I’ll do whatever you want.” Zeidman’s face, hidden beneath the bill of his baseball cap, remained motionless. Schneider eventually made the call and turned up 3 3 for bottom set. Zeidman was drawing: showing A J . The turn was the 5 , leaving Schneider with his full-house redraw to win the pot. The river was the 9 though, and Schneider took a big hit, down to 10,000. Zeidman’s lucky turn brings him up to 35,000. "I wanted you to fold," deadpanned Zeidman as he was collecting his chips.
Young cracks aces to double up
On an 8-5-2 flop, Ryan Young bet 2,500 and was raised to 6,000 by his opponent. Young then moved all in and was called. Young held pocket eights for top set, and was way ahead of his opponent's pocket aces. The turn and river were K-7 and Young doubled up to over 33,000 chips.
