$5,000 No-Limit Hold'em / Six Handed - Level One RecapJun 26, '08 Blinds: 25-50 Entrants So Far: 780 Notable Names in Field: Dan Harrington Hands and Storylines:
Shortly after folding to a river bet in a pot with about 2,000 chips in it, Kevin Saul was at it again. After a J-6-3 flop with two diamonds, Saul moved all in for about 9,000 and, after thinking it over for about two minutes, was called by a player in the small blind. Saul held pocket kings but was behind his opponent's 6-3 for two pair. The turn and river were a five and deuce, respectively, and Saul's day came to a quick conclusion. Action Dan takes down small pot Dan Harrington plays just a few tournaments a year, and this event is one of them. It's a fact that is not lost with spectators; Harrington has had a group of people following his table the entire hour. With a board of 9 Rousso loses chips early After checking on the turn of a K Off in the Brasilia Room, late registrations continued to expand the tournament field as tables were added throughout the first level. He got all his money in with 8-8 on a board of 8 7 -8. His opponent made the call with 10 9 and spiked the J on the turn, completing the straight flush and eliminating Daut. Poker is a very sick game.Dan Harrington Chips Up Late Dan Harrington spent most of the day battling for his stack but he was able to make a few moves towards the end of the day to finish with a respectable stack. On one hand the seat 6 player raised to $2,600 and Harrington made the call from the big blind. The flop came down J 9 2 and Harrington checked. Seat 6 bet out $3,100 and Harrington called once again. The turn was the harmless 3 and Harrington decided to bet out $5,000. Knowing Harrington's tight image, seat 6 decided to fold and allow Harrington to chip up to about $36,000.Paul Wasicka Gets No Respect During the last fifteen minutes of the day Paul Wasicka attempted to make some moves but was repeatedly denied. During one stretch of six hands, Wasicka raised four times including once under the gun and each time he was reraised, forcing him to fold. Recurring Theme It appears as though some players have trouble reading the board. Three times in the last level during all-in situations the board produced a chop, keeping the short stacks alive. Yet on all three occasions, the short stack did not realize he had chopped the pot. To make matters worse, twice the dealers did not see the chop as well. End of Day 1b Day 1b has come to an end. The board reads 610 players remaining, but that number will surly be revised as the official chip counts come in. Some notable players to survive are: David Levi, Dan Harrington, Paul Wasicka, David Pham, Jared Hamby Rob Mizrachi and several others. Day 1c will kick off tomorrow at noon local time. Stay tuned to Cardplayer.com for live coverage throughout the event. Player Tags: Dan Harrington, Paul Wasicka, Ryan Daut First Hour GoneJul 07, '07 Cards in the AirThe cards have been in the air for only one hour and already day 1B feels different than day 1A. Day 1A was filled with nervous anticipation and tons of hype. Today feels more like a poker tournament, a convention of gamblers if you will. The day started with World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack unveiling the 2007 Main Event Champion's bracelet. This year's bracelet is made of white gold with 120 diamonds and a 1.3 karat weight. Pollack handed the microphone to the Rio's own Penn and Teller who were given the honor of announcing "Shuffle up and deal!" Stacked Field Although many notable names played in yesterday's field, today may have it beat. Scott Fischman, Erik Seidel, Joe Sebok, Sam Farha, Evelyn Ng, David "The Dragon" Pham, Paul Wasicka, John Juanda, "Miami" John Cernuto, Roland De Wolfe and Jennifer Harmon are just some of the big names sharing the felt in today's heat of Main Event entrants. Champions Present On any day one of the Main Event it is easy to walk around the Amazon room and count anywhere from five to twenty bracelet winners littered amongst the field. Eric Seidel, Scott Clements, David Williams and Jeff Lisandro are a few of the notable bracelet winners in today's field but more noteworthy may be the number of Main Event bracelet winners that are all playing today. Tom McEvoy ('83), Berry Johnston ('86), Dan Harrington ('95), Scotty Nguyen ('98) and Joe Hachem ('04) have all elected to play on day 1B of this year's Main Event. A Family Affair? Poker skills may or may not be hereditary, the jury is still out on that one, but there is something to be said for families that play the game. Brothers Ross and Barny Boatman are both in the field today and sitting just a few tables apart are David Williams and his mother, Shirley. Barry Shulman, his wife Allyn Jaffrey Shulman and his son Jeff Shulman are all at different tables but playing on the same day as well, while father and son Donnacha O’Dea and Eoghan O’Dea from Ireland are also in the field. Hollywood in the House Tournament official Nolan Dolla announced over the loud speaker that TV personality Montel Williams was amongst the 1,300 or so that started the day. It is not uncommon on day one to spot a few celebrities either playing or watching. Director and writer Nick Cassavetes is playing today as well as Norm McDonald who is playing for PokerStars. www.pokerstars.com Euro news The European contingent is out in force today. Some interesting tablemates include Neil Channing and Michael Keiner, Ross Boatman and Pat O’Callaghan, Dave Shallow and Alexander Kravchenko, Al Kelleher and Max Pescatori, Rob Taylor and John Juanda, Bruno Fitoussi and Dan Harrington, Kathy Liebert and George McKeever. Early chip movements include popular Blonde Poker journalist and birthday girl Jen Mason down to $13,050 in chips and equally popular European Poker Tour honcho John Duthie up to $34,050 in chips. Recent bracelet winner Alan Smurfit is also playing as are Carlo Citrone, Praz Banzi, Juha Helppi, Vicky Coren, Marc Goodwin, Bruno Fitoussi, Simon Trumper, Pascal Perrault, Martin Wendt, Noah Boeken and Martin Green. Trumper trumps opponent Simon Trumper, from English crew Dusk Til Dawn, pulled what he described as 'an outrageous bluff' and was inordinately happy with his early play. 'I haven't made day two for five years and that has pi*sed me right off,' he told CardPlayer.com. 'I'm in the small blind with 8-6 and with three limpers i call. The flop came J-4-7 with two spades so if i hit a five i'm ahead or a spade i reckon i can represent the flush.' Cutting a long story short the limpers were weeded out when a spade came on the turn and another on the river. Trumper made it $2,500 into a pot of $4,500 on the river and the early raise dwelled. Picking up the story Trumper said,' Just then they announced former world champion Berry Johnson was playing today so i took my hands off my cards and clapped. When the other guys saw how relaxed and casual i was he immediately mucked,' beamed an upbeat Trumper. Notable Chip Counts

Round One, Hour TwoJun 19, '07 Action was off to a fast start in the first level of round one, but picked up even more this level. The majority of matches ended this level, and here are the outcomes of a number of notable pairings.Round One Winners Patrik Anotnius won his match against Max Pescatori. Freedy Deeb overcame Daniel Negreanu. John Phan called Isablle Mercier's short-stacked all-in with 10-8 and caught an eight on the flop to beat Mercier's K-6. Mike Matusow got short on chips early in his match, but came back to win when his Q-Q made a flush on the river to take out his opponents' flopped pair of aces. Andrew Black and Carmel Petresco both won their matches as well. Mayfair Match and the Online Poker Pair Dan Harrington and Howard Lederer were both highly respected locals of the Mayfair Club in New York. The pair found themselves head to head in this tournament, and ultimately Harrington came out on top when his 7 7 held up against Lederer's A 6 . If Harrington and Lederer represented the old school, Jon Turner and Jason Strasser were the archetypal new school pairing. Their heads up battle was long, but Strasser eventually prevailed when his Q-4 made two pair on a flop of K-Q-4, with Turner holding K-J. Strasser's two-pair held up and he advanced to round two. Quick Turn Around In Harman- Forrest Match Jennifer Harman had Forrest on the defensive for much of the match. Though he kept afloat, Harman kept Forrest from getting back above even. That is, until he doubled up with two black aces to take the lead. The very next hand Forrest raised with pocket tens, and Harman pushed with the 8 7 . Forrest's hand held up, and he was on his way to the second round. European update Andy Black beat James Kilarjian – ‘I hope they’re all as easy as that,’ said a relaxed Andy while eating his fruit lunch. Barny Boatman lost to Jose Tavares of Mexico when he pushed 98 with one spade on a three spade board but couldn’t connect with a fifth for his flush and was trumped by Tavares’ KK. Ben Roberts lost to Taylor Caby and was disappointed but still upbeat. ‘I felt I had the best of it,’ he said. I was happy with my play so I’m going home smiling again.’ Ram Vaswani beat Stephen Wise, Jani Sointula beat Vivek Rajkumar, and Roland De Wolfe beat Grant Lang to progress to round two. Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott lost to Dan Francis and Marco Traniello is also out. Other pairings included: Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier Vs Pieter Nordin We'll bring you news of these Euro hopefuls when play resumes.
