Big Hands
Scott Fischman Eliminated by David Benyamine
It’s a three-way all in pot on a flop of 7 3 2 .
Fischman: 6 2
Benyamine: 7 7
Opponent: J J
Fischman flops bottom pair and is in third place behind Benyamine who flops top set and the third player in the hand with an overpair of jacks. The turn and river are the A and the Q , no help to Scott Fischman who is eliminated from the tournament as David Benyamine climbs up the leaderboard with over 100,000 in chips.
Vanessa Rousso Getting Short
Vanessa Rousso and an unknown opponent were tangled up on a board of K 7 5 10 3 . Rousso bet 4,000 and was quickly called by her opponent. Rousso exposed the J 9 for a jack-high flush that she nailed on the turn. However, she was no good as her opponent exposed the Q Q for a higher flush that got there on the river. Rousso is down to 17,500.
Josh Arieh Aggressively Building Stack
The 2004 main event third place finisher has been hammering away at his table. He has built his stack up to well over 100,000 and is among the chip leaders. In one hand a player in middle position raised to 1,200 and the player to his left reraised to 3,400. Arieh held the button and thought for awhile before making it 9,300. Both his opponents folded. Arieh is at 132,000.

Ryan Young Wins a Small One
Ryan Young raised to 1,200 preflop and was called by Glen Chorny and another opponent. The flop came J J 3 and Young bet out 1,400. Chorny folded and his opponent on the button thought about it briefly, asking Young if he wanted a call. Young said no which prompted a quick call from the button. The J hit the turn and Young asked the dealer about the quad jacks bonus that has been a part of the day ones. Young eventually checked and so did his opponent. The river brought the 10 and Young checked again. The button also checked and exposed the 9 7 for a busted flush draw. Young tabled K-Q to take the pot with king-high. Young is at just about the starting amount of 30,000.

Elky Eliminates an Opponent
Bertrand Grospellier and his opponent got it all in preflop. Grospellier tabled the J J while his opponent exposed the K Q . The board ran out A J 7 9 8 and Grospellier added 13,000 to his stack. Elky is at 114,000.
Dutch Boyd Takes a Pot from Phil Ivey
On a board of A 6 3 , Dutch Boyd led out with 1,500 from the big blind and Ivey reraised to 4,500. Boyd made the call and both players saw a 4 hit the turn. Both checked and the 8 fell on the river. Action was checked again and Boyd tabled the 6 3 for two pair and Ivey mucked. Boyd has 135,000 while Ivey has 105,000.
Troy Weber Charges to the Chip Lead
A pot held 15,000 when the flop hit the table J 8 3 . Troy Weber checked and the player immediately to his left bet 7,000. Weber made the call and the turn fell 8 . Weber checked again and his opponent bet 11,000. Weber then check-raised to 30,000. His opponent reraised all in for 55,375 and Weber made the call after thinking it over for a few moments. Weber turned over 10 8 after his opponent quickly flipped up pocket queens, and the 9 fell on the river. Weber grew his stack to a massive 340,000 after the hand.

Eliminations: Ted Forrest, Andy Black, Daniel Negreanu
Big Hands:
Set Over set, Negreanu Leaves Early

Daniel Negreanu drew a seat at the ESPN secondary feature table today, but his stay would not even last one round after Negreanu made an early exit when his set of sixes walked into a better set of nines. There was a lot of dissapointment on the rail as many spectators had lined up to watch Negreanu play...there is always next year.
Mrs. Varkonyi Catches a Bluff
Olaf Thorson raised to 250 before the flop and next to act, Olga Varkonyi reraised to 750. Thorson made the call and said, "I don't know why you have to be so aggressive," giving the whole table a good laugh. The flop came 10 9 7 , and Varkonyi bet 1,500 after it was checked to her. Thorson made the call both players checked the turn (10 ). The river was the 9 and Thorson took a stab at the pot, firing 1,800 into the middle. Varkonyi called and Thorson said, "I play the board," showing 7 6 . Varkonyi turned over A A and raked the pot. She started the hand with 21,000, chipping up to 28,000 by the end of the hand.
Kravchenko Chipping Up

On a flop of A A 10 , the player in seat 7 bet 300 and Alex Kravchenko made the call, as did seat 1. The turn was the 6 , and both seats 1 and 7 checked to Kravchenko who bet 775. Seat 1 called and seat 7 folded. The river was the 9 and Kravchenko bet 1,100. Seat 1 tanked for a moment before mucking his cards. Kravcheno raked the pot, bringing his chip count 34,000 after the hand.
Don't Mess With A Mizrachi
The player on the button raised to 300 before the flop, and was called by both the blinds, including Robert Mizrachi in the big blind. Mizrachi led out on the flop of J 7 4 , betting 850 after the small blind checked. The button raised for an additional 1,500. Mizrachi thought only briefly before making the wager a total of 4,200. The button squirmed uncomfortably in his seat, rechecking his cards for some time before folding reluctantly. After the hand, Mizrachi is back up to 19,000 in chips.
Fischman Folds To Check Raise
Scott Fischman popped it up 300 before the flop from middle position, and was called only by the big blind, and they went heads up to the flop, which came out 7 4 2 . The player in the blind checked over to Fischman, who made a continuation bet of 525, only to have his opponent raise to a total of 1,300. Fischman considered the situation only briefly before getting away from his hand, standing from the table to leave for the break a few minutes early.
European Action
On a board of K 6 5 4 Swede William Thorsson called a bet of 1,200. The turn fell the 5 and Thorsson slowly shook his head as his opponent bet 2,000. “Aces” he said to his opponent – less a question and more a statement of fact.
“How did you know?,” was the reply. Thorsson counted his chips out twice and finally made the call but as he threw his chips in the middle he held his cards over the muck with his other hand. His opponent flashed the aces. “How did you know,” he asked again while raking in the chips.
Elsewhere Englishman Mickey Wernick snatched a nice pot from Greg Raymer and has around 25,000 in chips.
Hendon Mobster Ram Vaswani is the button to recent Irish Open winner Neil Channing’s big blind and both have just over their starting stacks.
EPT boss John Duthie has 22,900 in chips and relaxing with a massage, Barny Boatman was pushed off two pots in a row just before the end of level one but still has around his starting stack while former Swedish international soccer star Tomas Brolin is on a comfortable 37,000.
Patrik Antonius limped into the pot from under the gun. One player in middle position, the button, and both blinds also went to the flop. On the flop of J 9 8 , the blinds checked to Antonius, who fired a bet of 375. The middle position player folded action to the button, who then raised to a total of 1,000, pushing out the blinds. Antonius made the call, and fired out for another 1,600 on the turn, which brought the 10 . The button called, and then called his bet of 3,200 on the river after the dealer put down the 3 . Antonius showed down Q Q for a turned straight, but had to chop the pot with his opponent, who held Q J . After the hand, Antonius had only a whisker more than his starting stack, sitting behind around 20,500.

PLHE
Danny Fuchs Tripples Up, Knocks One Out
Vanessa Rousso raised to 425 before the flop and and Danny Fuchs smooth called. The big blind reraised the pot and both Rousso and Fuchs re-potted until all three of them were all in. Fuchs had the big blind covered and while Rousso had them both covered.
Rousso: J J
Fuchs: K K
Big Blind: A K
Board: J 10 7 6 K
Rousso flopped top set and led to the river where Fuchs sucked out with the case king, trippling up and eliminating one opponent.
Scott Fischman Eliminated by Andy Bloch
Scott Fischman got it all in with pocket queens against Andy Bloch's pocket tens. Bloch had him covered. The board came K-Q-J-9 in some combination, giving Fischman top set and Bloch the straight to the king. Bloch sucked out and sent Fischman packing early in Level 3.
PLO
Allyn Jaffrey Shulman Eliminated
Allyn Jaffrey Shulman raised to 550 before the flop and the player in seat 1 raised to 2,000. Seat 2 made the call and Shulman called all in for 1,375 more. The flop came J 8 4 , and seat 1 moved all in for (4,500 approx.). Seat 2 folded while seat 1 took the side pot. Shulman and seat 1 turned over their cards for the main pot.
Shulman: A A K 9
Seat 1: A A 8 6
Shulman and seat 1 were looking at a chopped pot, both with the overpair on the flop, but the 6 on the turn gave seat 1 two pair. The river was the 5 , and Shulman was eliminated from the tournament halfway through Level 3.
Minh Ly Knocks Two Out in Same Hand, Peter Gould Hits the Rail
On a flop of 8 5 3 , Minh Ly bet the pot (600) and just as seat 9 was about to fold, the floor person came over and told the dealer that the table would be breaking after the hand. Seat 9 made a rash decision to shove all in for 1,550 instead of taking his short stack to a new table. Peter Gould also followed that same logic calling all in for 1,100. Minh Ly made the call and had both players covered.
Minh Ly: Q 8 8 2
Gould: A Q 7 2
Seat 9: Q 7 6 4
Minh Ly flopped a set of eights and seat 9 had made an open-ended straght draw. Gould was drawing dead. The turn was the 9 and the river was the 3 , filling Ly and eliminating both Peter Gould and seat 9 in the same hand. The table broke immediately after the hand and Ly took an extra 3,000 or so with him to his new seat.

Experience Trumps Youth
Doyle Brunson brings in with a 7 ; action folds around to Dario Minieri who raises it up with the K showing, and he and Doyle see 4th street. Dario is dealt the 2 and he bets into Doyle’s 7 8 . Doyle quickly calls. Doyle and Dario check their K and J , respectively on 5th, and on 6th street, with Doyle getting the 4 , Dario bets 1,600 with his 5 . Doyle looks over the diminutive Italian and tosses in a raise. Dario folds and exchanges a smile with Brunson. Doyle is at about 24,000 chips and Minieri has only 15,000.
Brown Has Fischman’s Number
With the table showing:
Chad Brown: 6 4 6 8
Scott Fischman: A K 6 4
Chad Brown bets into Fischman on both 6th and 7th streets. Fischman thoughtfully calls on both streets and tosses his cards into the muck when Brown shows (Q )(Q )(2 ). Brown’s stack continues to soar at 61,000 while Fischman is still very much in contention with 36,000.
Ivey’s Aces No Good
Phil Ivey: J 5 3 7
Opponent: T 5 3 9
The action starts on 4th street, where Ivey bets into his opponent who quickly calls. 5th street, however, is where things heat up. Ivey bets out, his opponent raises, Ivey 3-bets, and she makes a quick call. Ivey slows down for the rest of the hand, check-calling her bets on both 6th and 7th streets. After she shows her (T )(3 )(4 ) for two-pair, Ivey shows (A )(A ) and pushes his hand toward the muck. Despite the loss, Ivey still has over 40,000 chips.

Big Hands and Storylines:
Raymer Cuts Down Forrest
Greg Raymer: T 2 8 9
Ted Forrest: T 2 K 2
Forrest bet out on 4th and 5th streets and was called by Raymer each time. Forrest slowed down on 6th street, check-calling Raymer’s bet. Forrest again checked after the final card and reluctantly called one last bet. Raymer revealed (A )(Q )(9 ) for an ace-high flush, enough to take down the pot. Raymer’s stack is at a healthy 32,000, while Forrest is languishing at only 7,500.
Chad Brown Knocks ‘Em Down; Thor Hansen Eliminated
On 6th street, with boards reading:
Scott Fischman: A 8 2 3
Thor Hansen: T J 6 T
Chad Brown: 4 A 5 2
the action heated up. Hansen checked, Fischman bet, Brown raised, Hansen called the two bets, Fischman 3-bet, and Hansen and Brown both called. On 7th street, Hansen checked, Fischman bet, Brown raised, Hansen folded, and Fischman called. Brown showed (2 )(4 )(2 ) for a boat made on 7th street and Fischman dejectedly mucked. Fischman and Brown each have about 30,000 in chips. The story isn’t so rosy for Thor. After the hand he was left with 3,000, which he lost on the very next hand.
Karas’ Quads Kill Phil
With the cards displayed:
Archie Karas: A K K 6
Phil Hellmuth: 2 A 2 8
Karas bet all the way down the line, receiving a call from Hellmuth on each and every street. When Hellmuth made the call on 7th street, Karas slowly – perhaps too slowly for Phil’s liking – turned over (K )(K ) for quad kings. Hellmuth mucked his hand and was left with only 8,000 after the hand. The pot takes Karas up to 25,000 in chips.

Big Hands and Storylines:
Small Pot; Big Aggression
Phil Hellmuth completed with the J up, the highest card at the table. Immediately to his right, Jordan Rich raised it to 800 with the 4 showing. Action folded back around to Hellmuth who flipped (8-2) and asked Rich, “This is a good hold’em hand, right?” Rich, in turn, flipped over his downcards: (J-7). The table had a good laugh at Rich’s bluff. David Grey chimed in, “It's on now!” as Hellmuth quipped good-naturedly, “I’m glad he showed that,” noting that he could use it to his advantage later.
“I Finally Made a Pair”
With boards reading:
Lawson: A 8 3
Karas: K 2 5
Negreanu: 3 4 T
Daniel Negreanu brought in on 3rd street; Ted Lawson raised, and Archie Karas and Negreanu both called. Action checked around on 4th street and was checked to Negreanu on 5th street. Negreanu bet out and both Lawson and Karas folded. Negreanu showed (T )(T )and chuckled, “I finally made a pair!”
Aggression Pays... As Does Hitting Gutshots
Phil Hellmuth called Daniel Negreanu down from start to finish with boards showing
Negreanu: T Q 5 J
Hellmuth: A Q 2 4
Negreanu flipped over (9 )(8 )(4 ) for a straight made on 6th street. Hellmuth, obviously frustrated with the hand, shuffled and re-shuffled his (K )(Q )(2 ) before tossing it face up in the muck. Negreanu has chipped back up to 19,000 while Hellmuth – late start and all – is down to about 13,000.
A Temporary Reprieve
Scotty Nguyen completed with 9 showing and Matthew Glantz deliberate putting his last 775 chips into the middle with the 4 up. Nguyen spouted, “It’s now or never, baby!” and Glantz moved his chips in. The player to Nguyen’s right also called with Q showing. The cards ultimately appeared:
Nguyen: 9 4 7 3
Opponent: Q 9 6 K
Glantz: 4 6 8 7
After being checked to on the river, Scotty bet 800, and, after the third player folded, Nguyen told Glantz, “Aces no good, baby.” And flipped over (J )(J )(7 ) for jacks-up. Glantz squeezed his final card and tabled the unlikely (2 )(2 )(2 ) to take down the pot. Glantz was momentarily up to 3,300 but was eliminated shortly after.

Big Hands:
Luske Takes a Hit
Marcel Luske limped under-the-gun, enticing two additional middle position players to just call the blind during the limit level. The player in the cut-off raised, with Luske and the other limpers making the call. Luske led out on the 10 5 2 flop, causing both limpers to fold and the original aggressor to raise. Luske called and checked and called a bet the turn when the 9 fell. The action was the same on the 8 river, and Luske’s opponent flipped over the K K . Marcel mucked his hand.
Allen Cunningham Busts Scott Fischman
In a six way limped pot, Scott Fischman bet 1,000 on a Q 7 7 flop and was called by Allen Cunningham. Fischman checked the J on the turn, and Cunningham fired 2 orange 1,000 chips across the line. After deliberating and counting his remaining stack, Fischman called. The K fell on the river, and Fischman pushed his remaining 2,200 into the pot, which Cunningham quickly called. Caught in a bluff, Fischman was already beginning to muck his hand when Cunningham turned over the Q 7 for a flopped full house.
Laak Doubles Up via Luske
While his famous poker playing girlfriend Jennifer Tilly made her exit during the limit level, Phil Laak battled with his shrinking stack. During the no-limit level, Laak pushed all in for 2,075 from the cut-off and was called by Marcel Luske. Laak’s 4 3 was an underdog to Luske’s A 9 , but the K Q 8 flop turned the tables on Luske, who needed to catch a diamond on the turn or river to overtake Laak with a higher flush. Unfortunately for Marcel, black cards fell on both streets and Laak doubled up.
Rags to Riches for Antonio
Meanwhile, Laak’s friend Antonio Esfandiari built his stack at an accelerated rate. Within minutes of being all in with the K J against his opponent’s A Q and flopping two pair to stay alive, Esfandiari had already busted another opponent and ended the no-limit level with over 25,000.
Devilfish Takes the Bait
David “Devilfish” Ulliot lost over 25,000 to an opponent by doubling up his K K , and now has less than 10,000 in chips remaining. He is currently still seated to the immediate right of Phil Hellmuth.

Seat No. 3 moves all in and Fischman thinks for several minutes before eventually folding with disgust. Fischman lost a total of $14,000 on the hand without ever seeing a showdown.

Hour Three Recap
Jul 07, '07
The remaining players fought through a crowd of spectators lined up to get into the Amazon room as they returned from their half hour break following the completion of level one. The blinds had increased to $100-$200 as the third hour of play got underway.
New Chip Leader
Joe Sebok has emerged as the chip leader in the last hour, having built his stack up to $56,000 as a result of his solid play. With four limpers into the pot, Sebok checked in the big blind. The flop came 10 9 6 and the player in the small blind checked. Sebok bet out $700 and the player in seat four raised to $1,500. The small blind instantly called and Sebok reraised to $5,500. Seat four folded and the small blind called. The turn was the 4 and both players checked. The river brought the A and the player in the small blind pushed all in for $11,000. Sebok thought for just a moment before making the call. The small blind showed A J for top pair with a busted flush draw. Sebok turned over 10 9 for two pair and took down the large pot.
Rollin' On the River
Doug Lee is across the Amazon room but with $50,000 in chips, is right on Sebok's tail. Lee chipped up in the last hour and did so with a little luck. The player second to act raised to $600 and action folded to the blinds. The player in the small blind called and Doug Lee called from the big blind. The flop came 8 5 3 and the small blind checked. Lee bet out $1,500 and the other player in the hand folded. The player in the small blind raised to $4,000 and Lee made the call. The turn was the 4 and the player in the small blind bet out $10,000. Lee waited for a moment before coming back over the top all in. The small blind called and showed 3 3 for bottom set. Lee turned over 8 5 for just top two. Sensing his tournament life was over, Lee looked defeated. The river brought the miracle 5 for Lee, filling his boat and giving him the huge pot. Lee's opponent was eliminated and Lee climbed the leaderboard.
Mercier Builds Her Stack
Isabelle Mercier, member of Team Pokerstars ( www.pokerstars.com), has also enjoyed some good fortune in the early hours and now sits with a healthy chip stack herself. Mercier raised to $600 second to act and was called by both the blinds. The flop was 10 7 2 and all three players checked. The turn was the 10 and the player in the small blind bet out $10,000. The big blind folded and Mercier made the call. The river was the K and the small blind led out with $2,000. Mercier called again and her opponent said, "ace high." Mercier flipped over K 5 for top two pair and raked in her chips.
Gone Fischin'
In a heads up pot with an unknown player, Scott Fischman made a $12,000 bet on the river with the board showing K 10 3 10 9 . Fischman's opponent called, putting him all in, and was holding A K . Fischman showed Q 10 and sent his opponent to the rail while building his stack to $35,000.
No Easy Task
A player by the name of Jason Halbrook is playing in today's event and he's sitting at table 229 with David Oppenheim and J.J. Liu. Sitting at the table with two great poker players is the least of Halbrook's worries today as he has another hurdle to overcome. Halbrook is seated with an aide that views his cards and relays the information to him because Halbrook is blind. With a difficult task ahead of him, we would like to wish Jason the best of luck.
Shallow In Deep
Englishman Dave 'Dubai' Shallow, seated at a table with former World Champion Tom McEvoy and recent bracelet winner Alexander Kravchenko put his tournament life on the line when he got his remaining $3,700 chips in the middle when the flop came 5 6 2 . He got two callers who checked down the 9 turn and 3 river.
Shallow flipped over 2-2 and scooped the pot to bring him back to $15,500 in chips.
'Aces' Gets Cracked
Simon 'Aces' Trumper is somewhat fortunate to be alive in this game. His top full house was bested by quad Jacks. This left him with just one-tenth of his starting stack.
He is fighting back though and looks very focused. He has $3,800
Some Euro Chip Counts
Marc Goodwin is in ebullient form and has $45,000, Donnacha O'Dea looks relaxed with $30,200, and the ever-smiling Praz Banzi has $14,050. Isabel Mercier has been moved to Eoghan O'Dea's table. Eoghan has $19,800 while Ben Grundy has $35,000.

First Hour Gone
Jul 07, '07
Cards in the Air
The cards have been in the air for only one hour and already day 1B feels different than day 1A. Day 1A was filled with nervous anticipation and tons of hype. Today feels more like a poker tournament, a convention of gamblers if you will. The day started with World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack unveiling the 2007 Main Event Champion's bracelet. This year's bracelet is made of white gold with 120 diamonds and a 1.3 karat weight. Pollack handed the microphone to the Rio's own Penn and Teller who were given the honor of announcing "Shuffle up and deal!"
Stacked Field
Although many notable names played in yesterday's field, today may have it beat. Scott Fischman, Erik Seidel, Joe Sebok, Sam Farha, Evelyn Ng, David "The Dragon" Pham, Paul Wasicka, John Juanda, "Miami" John Cernuto, Roland De Wolfe and Jennifer Harmon are just some of the big names sharing the felt in today's heat of Main Event entrants.
Champions Present
On any day one of the Main Event it is easy to walk around the Amazon room and count anywhere from five to twenty bracelet winners littered amongst the field. Eric Seidel, Scott Clements, David Williams and Jeff Lisandro are a few of the notable bracelet winners in today's field but more noteworthy may be the number of Main Event bracelet winners that are all playing today. Tom McEvoy ('83), Berry Johnston ('86), Dan Harrington ('95), Scotty Nguyen ('98) and Joe Hachem ('04) have all elected to play on day 1B of this year's Main Event.
A Family Affair?
Poker skills may or may not be hereditary, the jury is still out on that one, but there is something to be said for families that play the game. Brothers Ross and Barny Boatman are both in the field today and sitting just a few tables apart are David Williams and his mother, Shirley. Barry Shulman, his wife Allyn Jaffrey Shulman and his son Jeff Shulman are all at different tables but playing on the same day as well, while father and son Donnacha O’Dea and Eoghan O’Dea from Ireland are also in the field.
Hollywood in the House
Tournament official Nolan Dolla announced over the loud speaker that TV personality Montel Williams was amongst the 1,300 or so that started the day. It is not uncommon on day one to spot a few celebrities either playing or watching. Director and writer Nick Cassavetes is playing today as well as Norm McDonald who is playing for PokerStars.

Euro news
The European contingent is out in force today. Some interesting tablemates include Neil Channing and Michael Keiner, Ross Boatman and Pat O’Callaghan, Dave Shallow and Alexander Kravchenko, Al Kelleher and Max Pescatori, Rob Taylor and John Juanda, Bruno Fitoussi and Dan Harrington, Kathy Liebert and George McKeever.
Early chip movements include popular Blonde Poker journalist and birthday girl Jen Mason down to $13,050 in chips and equally popular European Poker Tour honcho John Duthie up to $34,050 in chips.
Recent bracelet winner Alan Smurfit is also playing as are Carlo Citrone, Praz Banzi, Juha Helppi, Vicky Coren, Marc Goodwin, Bruno Fitoussi, Simon Trumper, Pascal Perrault, Martin Wendt, Noah Boeken and Martin Green.
Trumper trumps opponent
Simon Trumper, from English crew Dusk Til Dawn, pulled what he described as 'an outrageous bluff' and was inordinately happy with his early play.
'I haven't made day two for five years and that has pi*sed me right off,' he told CardPlayer.com. 'I'm in the small blind with 8-6 and with three limpers i call. The flop came J-4-7 with two spades so if i hit a five i'm ahead or a spade i reckon i can represent the flush.' Cutting a long story short the limpers were weeded out when a spade came on the turn and another on the river. Trumper made it $2,500 into a pot of $4,500 on the river and the early raise dwelled.
Picking up the story Trumper said,' Just then they announced former world champion Berry Johnson was playing today so i took my hands off my cards and clapped. When the other guys saw how relaxed and casual i was he immediately mucked,' beamed an upbeat Trumper.
