Watch Interviews With High-Stakes Poker Players Before the Events Begin and Millions of Dollars Are Gambled

To hang on the golf course with some of the high-stakes poker pros like Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Erick Lindgren, and Doyle Brunson, it takes a high level of skill, a large bankroll, and a willingness to gamble. The Doyle Brunson and Dewey Tomko Golf Invitational showcased this, and the Card Player TV crew was there to catch up with the players before the action started.

The two events of the invitational were filmed by ESPN and are scheduled to air Sunday, Oct. 21 and Sunday, Oct. 28 at noon PT with the World Poker Tour's own Mike Sexton calling the action. Although this will be one of the first times that viewers will get to see poker players gambling for significant amounts of money on the golf course, that doesn't mean it has not been going on.

Here are some previous high-stakes golf bets:

  • Subject: Erick Lindgren
  • Players betting against the subject: Gavin Smith, Peter Feldman, Phil Ivey, Chris Bell
  • Terms: Complete four rounds of golf shooting under 100 each round from the pro tees with no caddy or golf cart.
  • Bet: A total of $340,000 from all bettors
  • Result: Lindgren won

"This is a piece of cake compared to that. I just about died!" Lindgren said about playing in the Brunson and Tomko Invitational.

  • Subject: Phil Ivey
  • Player betting against the subject: Unknown
  • Terms: Make a 50-yard shot.
  • Bet: The bettor gave Ivey 200-to-1 odds for $1,000 that Ivey would not make it.
  • Result: Ivey made the shot.
  • Subject: Russ Hamilton
  • Player betting against the subject: Ralph Rudd
  • Terms: Hamilton bet that no one competing in the given tournament would hit a sprinkler head all day.
  • Bet: $20,000
  • Result: Hamilton won
  • Side note: Hamilton did not realize when he made the bet that the sprinklers were placed deep in wide funnels in the ground all over the golf course. All balls close to the funnel would roll in and hit the sprinkler head. Rudd was aware of this.

"Ralph had a huge edge but he lost. Nobody landed on one. I can't believe they didn't," Hamilton said.

For more side bet stories, be sure to check out the video.
