Negreanu Folds the Winner on High Stakes Poker

Benyamine’s $101,200 River Bet Pushes Negreanu Out

Print-icon

Daniel NegreanuIt was obvious that Daniel Negreanu was confused by the action.

He shook his head a few times, blinked profusely, and wrinkled his brow as he tried to figure out what to do. And then he made the wrong decision.

In the biggest pot of the night, David Benyamine pushed out the best hand and got the worst hand to call him with a $101,200 check-raise on a board of 9Club Suit 8Spade Suit 3Spade Suit QSpade Suit AHeart Suit. He had 7Spade Suit 5Spade Suit for a small flush, while Negreanu folded the better flush with 10Spade Suit 9Spade Suit. Doyle Brunson couldn’t let go of his set of queens, ultimately paying off Benyamine.

Negreanu started the action in the hand when he opened with a pre-flop raise of $3,000. Brunson decided to slow play his queens, just calling, while Benyamine came along for the ride as well.

After Benyamine checked a flop of 9Club Suit 8Spade Suit 3Spade Suit, Negreanu bet out $8,500 with top pair and a flush draw. Brunson and Benyamine both called.

A QSpade Suit turn gave Brunson a set and the two others flushes, but everyone decided to slow it down and checked it around.

An AHeart Suit river didn’t change anything, and Benyamine declined to bet another time with his baby flush, tapping the table. Negreanu fired out $26,200 with the best hand, and the conservative Brunson made the call.

David BenyamineThat’s when Benyamine confused everyone.

The French pro reraised to $101,200, and Negreanu studied the situation for a while before begrudgingly giving up his hand. Brunson also made the wrong decision, calling and seeing the bad news.

When Benyamine flipped over his hand, High Stakes Poker viewers saw a rare glimpse of a truly frustrated and angry Negreanu. Traditionally taking all of his losses on TV well, Negreanu slammed his fist into the table and exclaimed, “Damn it! Unbelievable.”

Negreanu’s troubles didn’t go away after the small outburst. After correctly calling flop and turn bets from a bluffing Elezra, he lost an $118,600 pot after he got three-outered on the river.

“This is just sick, just so sick,” said Negreanu. “What the hell is going on?”

Kid Poker wasn’t the only pro who had a tough time in the episode. Texas Dolly put his consecutive cash-game win streak in jeopardy after his faulty call against Benyamine, and after he chased a couple draws that never came.

Brunson kept his sense of humor though, playfully mocking Phil Ivey at one point for his Full Tilt commercial where Ivey says over ominous background music: “I’ve been told I am intimidating, that sitting across from me is frightening. Or that my stare alone is enough to make a player crumble. But I’m just sitting here, playing the same game you are. Well, kind of.”

Fittingly, GSN aired the commercial during the very next commercial break.

Mike Matusow and Bertrand ‘Elky’ Grospellier both made their first appearance of the season in this week’s episode, though they played pretty close to the vest. Matusow didn’t play a single televised hand, while Grospellier only played one, making a tough-but-correct fold after Ivey flopped top set.

Grospellier talked about his first experience on High Stakes Poker with Card Player TV.

Bertrand Grospellier

Next week, Phil ‘OMGClayAiken’ Galfond joins the group. Check back to CardPlayer.com on Monday for a recap of the episode.

Seriously is there anyone in the history of High Stakes Poker that has absolutely bungled more hands than DNeg? Every week it seems he is either making a piss poor payoff with the worst hand, laying down the best hand, attempting a futile bluff, or playing check-call poker and letting himself get outdrawn. It's getting almost embarassing to watch.

Daniel has played pretty poorly and had terrible bad beats on HSP, I still cannot believe he folded the flush.

Man, such harsh comments. Daniel will be the first to admit that he was outclassed in HSP. He said so himself in his blog. He is working on becoming a better cash game player. Cut the guy some slack. He made a name for himself from tournaments, not cash games. Tournaments are where his small ball tactics work best. Trying to play small ball against people who know how to defeat it by being even more aggressive just will not work, and DN is having a hard time making the adjustment. But like all great players, he will figure it out. Just give him some time.

Daniel makes the right call 9 times out of 10... . it was apparent that he wanted to call and that he in fact went against his instincts, he just seconded guessed himself (imho) because there were two other players in the hand and with them both just calling the flop... no doubt figured at least one of them held two spades with more of premium hand than him.. YOU THINK LONG YOU THINK WRONG.. but if anything Doyle is the one threw everything off by camouflaging his queens... the type of hand that would you would normally RAISE with pre flop and bet out if no overcards came , but whos gonna second guess Doyle (the master) he was no doubt changing gears and since d weakness from the Frenchmen's hand... how many times does it need to be said.. thats just poker ... but DANIEL is still my hero and DOYLE is still a LEGEND and a bigger hero to me as well ... that DID NOT CHANGE !

Some say "good fold" some say "bad fold", whatever... it takes a lot of guts to fold a 10-high flush when David has not shown ANY strength in the hand until his check-raise on the end. p.s. I like the way Gabe Kaplan is doing the show solo and how he explains things to the viewers like, "Doyle shows his professionalism by not commenting when his 3 hits the turn after he has folded 3-3 preflop because it may affect the action". These are things we take for granted but alot of new players watching the show may not know. Good job Gabe! "my 2 cents".

hey NoMeNOT - wtf? LOL!! give Daniel some time... how much time do a professional poker player need to learn how to adjust in a cash poker game. HSP has been going on for how long now... 6- 7 years and How long has DANIEL known about high stakes poker games ....period.?? now u see how stupid u are.

----- DN claims you dont need a poker face or shades or anything. "because he is such an awesome player"

LOL!! Tom Dwan reads Daniel Negreanu when he has strength and when he is weak so easy~

****** @ cool1handduke - keep riding DN & Doyle's cock LOL!!

I think everyone is missing the point. The real shocker in the new HSP is that it looks like the spark between Tom Dwan and Daniel Negreanu has fizzled. I remember the first time we saw them both on tv together....it was a classic. Daniel told Tom how adorable he looked....Tom took Daniels money...it was like true love. Alas Tom looks disinterested and rumor has it he has been spending long nights playing a certain...dare I say younger...online pro. I always rooted for their special firendship to succeed but its starting to look a little shakey. Remember guys...Gay means by definition Happy and both Daniel and Tom looked very Happy together. We are all pulling for you!!!

I wonder how many people think Daniel would go out with Tow Dwan on a date - 30% or 60% or 90%

How many people think Daniel Negreanu would go out with Roy Winston on a date (fellagio heaven)
- 23% or 53% or 99%

@@@ i would like to hear your guys responses

your entitled to you opinion..even though it's wrong and nobody cares what you think

if your weren't such a jackass i'd say you should play in a cash game with Doyle and let him school you, but unless you have enough money to donate those guys don't allow jackasses in the front door...

anyways... go ahead and go back to being an idiot now

maybe its me, but whenever i watch negranu play on tv, he plays like a fish. i feel he never makes the right play, he forces it to much, and he always talks to himself, convinces himself hes beat and then still makes the crying call. then when hes ahead like on hsp, he folds. with the exception of wsop europe, negranu never plays good when on tv...obviously hes a good player, his track record speak for itself, but on tv...FFIISSHH

Hey guys:

Do you realize that the game that you see on HSP is seamlessly edited? The actual session is much longer.

That presents the critics of a particular hand with an insurmountable hurdle whose play by Daniel you disagree with.

You do not have all the information of what has occurred in the game previous to the play you criticize.

Some of you may realize, and others may not, that each game has its own unique set of circumstances that dictates the strategy and the tactics of that game. Even though two or more games may be populated by the identical players for identical stakes.

hey tex - everyone knows that the shows are edited in some way or form~ no one is arguing about that...
*** Daniel has shown a complete uselessness at a cash game against the world's best. we u are PWNED you are just PWNED!! Its like the Detroit Lions trying to beat the SAINTS. Daniel is the Detroit Lions.

*** ALL the editing in the world cant take away stupidity and foolishness that Daniel protrays on and off the felt. He says racial comments or makes videos that some consider racist. He talks about other poker players on public forums and expect not to get a backlash. if you would like proof tex i can send u several specific references of Negreanu making such awful decisions.

### DN had a great year or two in 2003/04 in poker tournaments. HE felt invincible and thought GOD was looking down o him and saying to him that he is the golden boy of our generation to speak to the masses about angels and spiritual things on blogs and such.

Yes even on cardplayer blogs... or that silly site - full contact poker lol!!

Its just silly to believe anything he says anymore... I am not saying he cant revamp his style of play and become a Mercier in tourneys or a DURR in cash games. But most poker players have a hard time in one and excel in the other. Daniel should stay off HSP (but i doubt he listens bec he get money from jokerstars to play on televised poker games)

Sammy Farha realized something great about HSP - he said that he has no real value to go on HSP because he is not sponsored like all the rest. Any money he put down is his own money and it affected his cash games against alot of players outside of the tv show... *** thats a real thought out decision by a smart man.

I've always been a fan of DN, and i gotta admit it's getting painful to watch a guy who used to be on top play every hand as if he can still outplay anyone on any hand (like Ivey and Dwan seem to be able to do) keep in mind that it was around the time they were filming HSP this season that DN started to talk in his blogs about how much better dwan, ivey, and antonious were. and now that the show is airing, he can't help but admit that his game has serious leaks to plug. i just wanna see if the likes of DN, phil helmuth (along with the rest of his new "trying to be the best poker players" or whatever, and now even maybe Doyle can really keep up with these guys in the high stakes games...whaev, it all makes for an interesting game.

Man, I totally disagree with most of the posters in this thread. Many of the comments above are mean-spirited and vicious against Daniel Negreanu. It's nice to have the anonymity of the internet so that you can rant about how much of an idiot someone who's made a living for many years playing high stakes poker has played lately.

My main point against all you critics is that DN is not primarily a no-limit holdem player. He
would be the first person to admit that he's not at the same level as Dwan and Ivey and Antonius at No-Limit Holdem cash games. From what I have read of his bio is he is primarily a limit poker specialist. He excels at playing HORSE and in the big game where many different limit games are played. His best game being 7 card stud hi / lo.

He's playing High Stakes Poker on GSN because he likes to be on TV, and has money pretty much to burn, and likes to challenge himself . Sure you could fault him for that, but none of you critics above would do the same, would you?

DN is simply not a good player. People thought he was good in 2003 because he would guess hands every hand and if right once or twice, people would be like wow.

Decent players can only put a player on a hand range based on their betting and calling patterns.

Good players do that also but make players put them on the wrong card range.

The great ones do both of those things and think and figure out what hand you have to bet for value or how much they need to make you bet to lay it down. Only a few really great players. Ivey, Durrr are the top two at this time. They can have any two cards but for some reason when they are called they literally have the nuts. Negreano doesn't have a 6th sense. Its just play your cards correctly and how it holds up. Similar to PHil Helmuth who's only higher level quality is that he can lay down strong 2nd best hands consistently. That is a true gift, but he's clueless how to bet for value, how to bluff and how to put someone on a hand unless he's put to a defensive decision.

Actually it was 2004 for DN. He had a horrible 2003 and felt like he was missing a golden opportunity becuz poker was about to explode and ppl only knew names like Doyle, Johnny Chan, PH, and Moneymaker. He was right. He exploded in 2004 and now is a household name. LOL to Sammy putting up "his own money" on HSP. "my 2 cents".

@ pepperonipizza - you must work for mazzios or something... anyway to say that everyone would never say anything to Daniel Negreanu's face and only on the internet blogs is just plain weak. When it comes to me - I criticize people plays right at the Fing table... in their faces.

*** I dont need to hide - I like DN as a poker player too. I already know he has won and done great in limit holdem tournaments. Brock beat his ass for a chance at a bracelet last year in Limit Holdem.

*** what i dont like is Daniels' soap box bull chit -
*** what i think is funny is he is finally realizing that he has no hope against Top level poker players. He should go back to playing Matusow, Lindgren, Hellmuth, Cunnigham and Cindy Violette.

Did you guys forget when Doyle folded the 10 high flush against Jamie Gold's 9 high flush when he Jamie check raised Doyle on the turn?
I think Daniel was put in a really tough spot. The same tough spot that Doyle was facing against Jamie. And they both laid down the best hand.
(I'm not comparing Daniel to Doyle in any way. It's just a similar situation and they both folded the best hand).
