WPT – Doyle Brunson Classic Championship Day 5Final Table Set – More Fireworks on the Felt |
|
|
The final six in the World Poker Tour Doyle Brunson Classic Championship is now determined, but getting to that point from the remaining 16 players was anything but pleasant thanks to yet another off-the-wall situation at the table, this time between Scotty Nguyen and Chad Batista.
The day began innocently enough with short stacked Joe Elpayaa losing a race to John Juanda. The online pro with the name “Big Egypt” received $38,092 for his 16th place finish. He was quickly followed out the door by Matt Waxman, who was unfortunate enough to run his big slick into Joe Cassidy’s pocket kings. The pro from South Florida picked up $47,615 for his 15th-place finish.
The next two players went out on coin flips, as Carter King and Mike Sowers both failed to outrun their opponents in crucial race situations. Both players banked a nice score of $47,615 for their efforts.
Longtime grinder Lee Salem hung around on the short stack for over a day before busting in 12th place and earning $57,137. At that point, play slowed down considerably as the tournament was dealt hand-for-hand.
At the time, it took a bizarre turn of events for the final table of ten to be determined. John Juanda moved all in from the button, but failed to move any chips forward, opting instead to verbalize his action. The dealer then repeated the all-in bet and awaited Chad Batista’s decision. Batista, wearing headphones and a hoodie, and seeing eyes on him, asked the dealer if the action was on him. The dealer confirmed that it was and the young online pro announced that he was all-in, seemingly putting the pressure on the shorter stacked Scotty Nguyen in the big blind.
At this point, Nguyen, recognizing Batista’s mistake, began laughing at him. Batista became visibly upset after realizing his error and he and Nguyen traded words as the floor was called over. Nguyen continued to laugh as the tournament director ruled that verbal declarations are binding and then moved all in himself, quickly turning over pocket aces.
A devastated Batista showed pocket deuces and Juanda revealed pocket A

and Nguyen tripled up to 2.9 million. Since he had Nguyen covered before the hand started, Batista took the side pot of just 405,000 and Juanda was eliminated in 11th place.
After the table consolidated to the final 10, Batista wasted no time getting his short stack all in with pocket fives. Nguyen looked him up with K
J
and knocked him out when the board came king high. Batista, who may have been madder at himself than anything, was not consoled by his $57,137 payday.
Nguyen continued his tear, making a straight against Curt Kohlberg to send him to the rail in ninth place. Kohlberg, who had spent most of the day among the chip leaders, had to settle for $76,183.
Short stacked Eric Hershler was the next to go in eighth place, when his A

fell to Josh Arieh’s K
J
. The former WPT champion was awarded $107,133.
Some more controversy surrounded the final elimination of the night. Joe Cassidy moved all in from under the gun, Arieh isolated all in himself and the action moved to Nguyen in the small blind. Despite Shawn Buchanan still behind him, Nguyen picked up his cards and flashed them to the table as he folded, showing A-Q, which more than upset Steve O’Dwyer.
Buchanan then called all in behind him with pocket queens, which were ahead of Arieh’s tens and Cassidy’s K
J
. The board ran out J

and Cassidy was eliminated, nearly tripling up Buchanan in the process.
The final table will begin Saturday at 4 p.m. PST. Here’s a look at the seating assignments and chip counts.
Seat 1 — Daniel Alaei — 3,925,000
Seat 2 — Faraz Jaka — 5,385,000
Seat 3 — Josh Arieh — 1,710,000
Seat 4 — Steve O’Dwyer — 1,050,000
Seat 5 — Scotty Nguyen — 4,900,000
Seat 6 — Shawn Buchanan — 2,800,000

Once again Scotty shows his hand, demonstrating that he is a pompous, self-absorbed, prima donna with no respect for his opponents or the rules of the game. Like that of a spoiled child, his behavior will continue until somebody (tournament director) steps up and enforces consequences for his unacceptable behavior.

It's legal to show. Scotty probably felt that BB wouldn't call there anyway and UTG had unrelated cards. Either that, or for whatever reason he didn't GAS.
I wonder if Batista was listening to Hellmuth's Black Belt materials...

Diti Mau "Scotty" Nguyen, has in recent years become the absolute epitome of an ***hole. His irritable bad tempers, immature antics, and unprofessional poker etiquette has made him a laughing stock among his peers.
Believe me when I tell you, he is depressed from alcoholism and has no other outlets therefore plays poker to vent out his frustrations. He gains the only true satisfaction left in his empty life bringing others down to his level. Like a 2 year old that cries for attention. Grow the f*** up baby!

I'd laugh at the stupid kid for wearing his iPod too! Do other sports players play blindfolded or missing some other sense? No. They'd be insane to.
Clearly you three have not met Scotty Nguyen, he is a great ambassador for the game and a great player as well. If you ever have the opportunity to play with him, I would hope you weren't stupid enough to listen to music instead of the game.
Though I'm sure he doesn't bother to read this, keep doing what you're doing, Scotty, you still have 100 fans for every hater.

If Scotty has 100 fans for every hater, then he must have about 10 billion fans. Maybe he IS nice every once in a while to others he plays with, or even most of the time. However, the fact remains that on multiple occasions he has been a jerk (worse than Hellmuth even, in my opinion).
He's bad for the game, and should either seriously revise his behavior or bow out from the game.

scotty being scotty!! chad aka lilholdem954 is known to have a temper as i have witenessed personally on many occasions. he is more mad at himself than anything else. scotty didnt help matters by laughing at him, but after a dozen or so michelob ultras, what do you expect.
you dont get to many chances to win a wpt title, and chad let one slip away.

Scotty acts like an idiot but in this situation it's to get Batista on tilt, and he probably deserves it, once the players are in the money iPod's should be banned. As Raymer says, if you are not paying full attention to the game you will miss something, in a $15K buy in tourney down to about 11 players, why would you not pay full attention?
I love the way some of you guys talk about Scotty like you know him, he may have his problems with alcohol but I believe he still has a great family, so I don't see why his life is supposedly so empty that he just does this for kicks.
It may be rude to laugh like he did, but why should other player's make it easier for Batista, verbal actions are as binding as moving chips, no player has to act in a certain way just because one of the players can't be bothered to pay full attention, that's his dumb luck.
Poker players are mean spirited by nature, if they are drunk and someone does that, then some of them will laugh, don't blow this out of proportion and equate it to what Scotty did in the HORSE, that was disgusting, this is just a bit rude.

I hadn't read that Scotty showed his hand, that is dumb and idiotic, for sure.

Was Scotty drinking again? I used to like him a lot but his drinking and outbursts have cost him many fans and supporters. He needs treatment and maybe a ban from the tables would get him the help he needs.
I hope this teaches the ipod and other distraction users a lesson, no excuse for not paying attention when you are going to be in the action.just stupid

i have played with Scotty many times he is a strong personality but he is not a total jerk. remember that the media grabs spots and moments in time.
take care when allowing a few media reports to create an entire impression. i am not saying that he was or was not "rude" but we do not know what we do not know.
i will sit with him any day.he

Poppy and Skull, it is not legal to expose your cards in this spot and Poppy, the "whatever reason" he "didn't GAS" are the reasons I have listed in my initial post. Nothing really wrong with laughing at Batista for being asleep at the wheel in my opinion. My comments were made in light of his exposing his cards, and of his outbursts on day 3 which is described in the article, "Bad Behavior Highlights Third Day.." Scotty "unloaded F-Bombs at the quiet and polite man sitting to his right" and "Nguyen immediately slammed the felt and began screaming obscenities toward the cutoff and the rest of the table..." And yes, I have known and played with Scotty for 15+ years. He needs to be held accountable for his actions.

i would have laughed my ass off at chad idiocy too but in his defense Juanda should have been required to move chips forward. i've played in many tourneys at bellagio and everytime a player declares allin, they USUALLY make the player move at least a chunk of their chips forward. i watched some of the final two tables yesterday and the dealers looked anything knowledgeable. the bellagio is not what it used to be. the consistency in making decisions and standards in play are lacking.

JTP why would you say it's not legal to show your hand in this spot? Action folds to Juanda on the button he shoves, Batista then mistakenly shoves in the SB, then once the floor is called over to verify the all-in Scotty then moves all in from the BB and turns over his hand. The action is complete so it's completely legal.

ahhh...JTP is speaking of showing AQ before folding with action pending, not the Juanda hand. showing was out of line but not deplorable as the story suggests. it's an example of how players nowadays thinking it's cool to flash a card(s) when folding, "look at me, i'm making a big laydown" silliness

I just have to wonder why people think that poker players, of all people, care a whole lot about what their "fans" think of them? Especially the more belligerent players?
How many poker players (or players of any sport) can you name that sit at the poker table, or walk onto their respective fields, etc, that play the game specifically for the sake of their fans? Using sports as a comparison is borderline if you're talking about fans...
I can't think of any poker players who would care more about their fan base than the thrill of playing the game. Not to mention, why would a POKER PLAYER care more about their fan base than the bottom line at the table... winning money?
There are jerks in every televised profession, or every profession where skill can have a pronounced impact. I just doubt that poker player X really cares what his fan Joe Blow in state Y or country Z thinks of him/her.

Mike,as Pete points out, I'm referring to Scotty showing his AQ to the table with Shawn Buchanan behind him, yet to act. Two other players had already moved in and Scotty, thinking only of Scotty and being very proud of his lay down, wanted to show the others how smart he is. Thanks to Scotty's ego and his disregard for the rules of the game and his opponents, Buchanan now has additional information that he is not entitled to have; namely that one Ace is out, making it less likely that one of the all in players has AA. He also now knows that one of the remaining two Q's is dead. I can guarantee you that if Scotty was one of the all in players (and he lost the hand) and somebody else flashed their AQ in that spot, that his bitching and moaning would go on for days. And yes Pete, it is deplorable if you happen to be one of the two players with your tournament life on the line.

I stand corrected. While it is NOT legal to show, penalties in place for a first offense - if any - range from a warning to a timeout.
And, Jack, you stand corrected, too. There ARE opponents for whom he has respect or, at least, to whom he shows respect. No doubt, you could list them.

I agree that there are opponents against whom Scotty would not pull this crap (exposing cards out of turn, yelling obscenities, etc.). These are opponents against whom such behavior would result in (or at least Scotty believes would result in) sufficient consequences for him to avoid the behavior.
