WPT -- Southern Poker Championship Day 1

The first day of the World Poker Tour Southern Poker Championship $10,000 no-limit hold’em championship event began Wednesday at noon CST. The event attracted 283 players, an increase over the inaugural year of the tournament, when 256 players descended upon the Beau Rivage Hotel and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. At the end of play on day 1, a suprising 175 players still remained. It should be noted that the Beau Rivage put up $24,219 in added money to the prize pool to create a first-place prize worth $1,025,500 (the $25,500 representing a seat in the WPT Championship in April). The field will return tomorrow at noon for day-2 action, and the plan is to play down to 27 players, so it could be a very long day.

Hand of the Day:

Curt Kohlberg raised to 625 from early position preflop, and then two players called before Shaun Deeb reraised to 3,825. Kohlberg reraised to 13,925, forcing the two players stuck in the middle out of the pot. Deeb moved all in for just a little more than the size of Kohlberg’s bet, and Kohlberg called the young online professional down. Their cards:

Kohlberg: 5 3
Deeb: 9 9

Board: K 6 4 K 2

Deeb was way out in front on the hand but the 2 made Kohlberg a straight on the river that eliminated Deeb.
