A report in today’s edition of Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat suggests that a new report is recommending the government amend current gambling laws to allow poker players to claim back online losses from the game.
The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health commissioned the report from the University of Joensuu and the paper claims the new law would effectively force online poker companies to block Finnish players from playing on their sites.
Losses would be recouped from either the online provider, credit-card company, or player, and the legal amendment is designed to protect problem gamblers and children.
No such law exists anywhere else in the world, and the newspaper says the Ministry feels other countries will, in time, follow suit.
Helsingin Sanomat says Finns spend around €150 million on online poker each year, that there are 40,000 problem gamblers in the country, and that Finns are the fourth-biggest gamblers in the world in terms of spend per head of the population.
