The annual PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) is back in a big way. The highly anticipated online tournament series features 23 diverse events and a total of $15 million in guaranteed prize pools. The series starts Sept. 14 with a $200 buy-in $400,000-guaranteed sixhanded no-limit hold'em event and concludes on Sept. 30 with the $2,500 buy-in $5 million-guaranteed no-limit hold'em main event.

This year's WCOOP is a cornucopia of poker variants unlike virtually any other tournament series has ever seen. Included in the slate of events are a five-card draw event and a deuce-to-seven triple draw event. Also included are seven-card stud, Omaha, razz, H.O.R.S.E., and, of course, plenty of hold'em. The hold'em tournaments include shorthanded events, a heads-up event, and a triple-shootout event.

J.C. Tran As a comparison to the numbers for this year's series, last year's WCOOP had 18 events and a total of $10 million in guaranteed prize pools. That series eventually boasted more than $18.5 million in prizes, leaving expectations high for this year's series. The winner of last year's main event was poker pro and Card Player Player of the Year leader board mainstay J.C. Tran, playing under the screen name area23JC. He pocketed more than $670,000 after a deal was made at the final table.

PokerStars is currently running qualifiers for all events. The qualifiers run for as little 400 Frequent Player Points (with rebuys) for a supersatellite for event No. 5 ($500 no-limit hold'em) to $320 for a direct-entry satellite into the $2,500 main event.
