Powerball Lottery Reaches $400 Million Jackpot
The Pot Is The Third Largest Ever For The Contest
The Powerball lottery jackpot has reached $400 million, which is the third largest ever for the contest. The jackpot comes just three months after a Florida woman won the largest ever.
The jackpot is also the fourth largest in lottery history, as the Mega Millions also has reached mammoth heights in recent memory.
In order to capture the prize, players must match five numbers and the Powerball number. The odds of winning are one in 175.2 million.
Each ticket is $2. The lump-sum payout for the $400 million would be $230.3 million.
In May, the aforementioned Florida woman claimed a $590.5 million prize. She was 84 years of age and opted for the lump-sum payout. In November of last year, the Powerball reached $580 million when two people won. Before the final drawing, tickets were being sold at a rate of 130,000 per minute. The next drawing for this Powerball is scheduled for August 7.
Earlier this year, a man won the $338 million Powerball and made the generous promise to pay the rent for his entire neighborhood.
A total of 43 states offer Powerball.
Some lotteries have been taken online with the emergence of Illinois as a possible player in the real-money web gambling industry. The state had flirted with the idea of offering other casino games through its lottery division, but hasn’t yet authorized such activity.
