Here’s a look at the headlines for this week in the gaming business world.
Nevada casinos took in $832.5 million in June, which represented a six percent drop in year-over-year comparisons. Las Vegas specifically, took in $483.7 million which constituted a 4.5 percent drop. As a result of these numbers, the state was only able to collect $38 million in taxes.
Gov. Jerry Brown has until the end of the month to decide whether or not to approve the construction of two Native American casinos miles from their tribal lands. The Enterprise Rancheria of Maidu Indians and the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians were both given permission by the state of California, but Brown has the power to reverse the ruling.
The Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane is looking for an additional 400 workers as it prepares to open its new hotel and casino to replace its temporary set up. The new hires would bring the property’s total workforce to 1,000. Casino officials expect to have a grand opening before the end of the year.
Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley’s plan for a Las Vegas-style casino in Prince George County cleared its first hurdle on Thursday, earning an 11-1 vote in favor of the project. The vote now goes to the Senate for Friday’s deliberation. If passed, along with a table games expansion proposal, the casino will be in the hands of state voters this November.
MGM Resorts International is currently setting their sights on a three-block parcel of land in Springfield, Massachusetts, which could one day be the home of casino, hotel and parking garage. An MGM spokesman said that an official announcement will be made in the coming weeks.
