DOYLEISM OF THE DAY -- 'Success is peace of mind in knowing you did your best.'

I’ve been getting lots of phone calls asking about my health. I haven’t been anywhere for a while and its true I haven’t been feeling very good after extensive traveling and other recent events. But, to my knowledge, there is nothing seriously wrong with me. My bride of 48 years has been having some health problems and I’ve been sticking close to home worrying about her. The only negative thing about my health is I finally have asked myself, “am I really this old?” Of course I know how many years I’ve got behind me but I guess I still think young and about the future. I guess that’s a good thing, anyway, thanks to everyone who called. It’s been a while since I played any live poker. I play 5-10 NLH at DoylesRoom.com several times a day, but I can’t seem to focus enough for any long sessions. The NBC Heads Up Championship starts this Friday and I’m still debating if I want to play. Granted, I won’t be at my best, but I can put my game on auto-pilot and be competitive in that format. The antes and blinds have to go up very fast and that means whoever wins needs a lot of luck. If I decide not to play, there are lots of players waiting to take my place, but I’m pretty sure I will. It is a fun tournament with no long hours and it will be good to get out of the house. A friend in Texas asked me why he never sees my name on the leaderboard of any recent tournaments. I told him, “I don’t know, could it be because I haven’t played in any of them?” I think the cash game players, including myself, owe the online pros an apology. I know there are lots of things about the mechanics of online play we don’t know and we shouldn’t criticize the pros that only play online. Maybe the hard truth is cash players are inferior to online players when at the computer and vice versa. I’ve decided there are 4 different kinds of poker players. (1) cash game (2) online (3) tournament (4) all around. Different skills are required for each group. There would probably be a different #1 in each, but if you listed the top 10 in each category, there would be more of the #4 group than any other. So my vote for the best players goes to the all around players. Could it be because I would probably be in that group (LOL)? The bottom line is it’s all poker and poker is the greatest game in the world. Another question I’ve been pondering during my brief (I hope) exile from the poker scene is how do the old time poker players stack up against today’s best players? As there was no internet or tournaments long ago, you to have to eliminate the specialists in those fields. There wasn’t nearly as many games to choose from so take away the all around players and it leaves the cash game guys. The biggest difference is that the mentality of the two eras are so different. The oldtimers were playing for their living with little or no other income. Many, many times they had their entire net worth in front of them. That makes it a lot harder to make these big bets when you didn’t have much money and didn’t know where you could get any more. These guys were true gamblers. Compare that to today’s great players who have lots of income from today’s poker world. Good luck to the guy that 4 or 5 bet any of the oldtimers trying to make a play on them. So, for that reason it is almost impossible to make valid comparisons about today and yesteryear. Most of today’s players have good management skills but don’t have the pure gambling mindset of the old guys. There are exceptions. Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan and David Benyamine are some names I think are “throwbacks” to the old time pure gamblers. I think any one of the three would fit right in with the great players of the past. It makes me think of a Stu Ungar story. Someone brought up the question, “What if there was only one bullet in a six shot revolver, would you spin it and put the gun to your and pull the trigger for 20 million dollars? Everybody agreed that nobody would do that. Stu said, “for 20 million, they could put 5 bullets in the gun and I would do it.” Everyone laughed but I’m not sure Stu was joking. DoylesRoom has an unusual promotion with our bounty tournament every Wednesday. We have 3 or more bounties each one worth $1,000. Knock out 2, win $10,000, knock out 3, win $50,000. Last week, a player broke 2 bounties and won 10k! Not bad for a $25 buy-in tournament and if it is your 1st time on DoylesRoom.com, you get the $25 back, I don’t know who comes up with those things. I hope everyone was as proud of our mayor, Oscar Goodman, as I was. President Obama made a second disparaging remark about Las Vegas in a speech and Oscar refused to meet him on a recent visit to Vegas, unless he apologized. The president didn’t apologize and Oscar was very visible by his absence during our president’s stay. Way to go Oscar! -DB

Doyle, I hope you and your wife feel better soon. I'm not old enough to have been around the old timers but I'm pretty sure they had a lot more class than todays internet players. What a classless bunch.I play midstakes in Vegas with alot of these kids and sometimes I wish I could pull out my gun and put one through them like in the good old days, maybe then they would wise up. But then I wouldn't get there money (unless I took there wallet) then Ide have the additional robbery charge. There isn't a better feeling than when you set them up for that big hand and take there entire stack and the look on there face makes putting up with there #@%# worth it.

I was proud of Oscar for standing up for this city. Im tired of Obamas attacks not just on Las Vegas but on all business. I think in his mind Vegas is all thats wrong with America. Enough is enough already Ive had it with this guy. Were seeing this guy for who he is. Lets get rid of Harry as well. God Bless America!

I'll try to make this short Doyle. When "I made a million dollars playing poker" aka Supersystem first came out my father inlaw was living in Vegas. He bought it for me and sent it to Chicago where I lived. I studied it for 1 1/2 years and came to Vegas for a $1,000 buy in tourney at the Golden Nugget. I had never played a hand of holdem, let alone never played in a tournament. I made the final table and went card dead. There were 188 players and I finished third. Bones Berland won the tourn. I had Bobby B at my table and I put him out with a set against his 2 pair.

Since then I have made a living playing little tourn. close to my house. Anywhere from $300-$3000 for first place. I quit playing in 1995 and I am still living on the money. Thanks for the book.

I quit for 2 reasons:
1. I could not hold my concentration for more than 3 hours, whereas before I could concentrate for 2 days.
2. If I ever ate during the breaks I would go broke within an hour. Can't explain it but it always happened.

Thanks again

disparaging remark about las vegas? what is wrong with telling young people not to spend their student loans gambling in vegas? it's just a figure of speech! he didn't have anything against las vegas per se. get real people, even the ceo (or president) of mgm-mirage is saying that his speech was taken out of context!

as for the mayor, i think he is an embarassment for acting like a child.

obama is an embarrassment. I understand why alot of people stick with him. Same reason alot of people stuck with bush, also an embarrassment. Americans need to come together for what's right for our families and our country. Unfortunately, I think there are many, many differences. Not nearly enough understanding. As for poker Doyle you are the man.

^those comments were not taken out of context, and he made similar remarks about vegas TWICE. if he did not mean them, he could have easily apologized and clarified. Oscar standing up for his city and all the countless jobs that people could lose if this derogatory attitude about las vegas sets in is nowhere near childish. it seems as though you may not fully understand the implications of singling out and targeting a city or region, one which is already struggling severely . do the people who live and work in las vegas not matter? this president is proving to be extremely classless, arrogant, and nowhere near as intelligent as most media have tried to portray him. also, it seems he does not care about reviving this economy, whether it is focusing on an unpopular health care plan that will raise premiums and taxes, or trying to impose new taxes on banks, or trying to push through his cap and trade bill which would increase energy costs for all americans, or a record almost 4 trillion dollar budget this year creating even more astounding debt, the list goes on and on...

dsgnr4hire, its not the governments job to tell people how to spend there money, what to eat, what doctor to see, what operation to get, when to get a mamogram, what kind of lightbulb to use, what mileage to get etc...

I understand there are some weak minded people who feel the need to be told what to do. Thats not the governments job.Thats what friends, family and church are for. Fortunately I think there the minority and the rest of this country is waking up.

It is unfortunate that Obama won't behave more like Mayor Goodman. The President took an oath to go to bat for the American People just like Mayor Goodman took a responsibility to go to bat for Las Vegas' citizens. Still in Iraq/Afghanistan/Pakistan. No reasonable healthcare, at least not reasonable for anyone who isn't a boardmember or majority shareowner of a major health insurance company, I mean cmon guys. Goodman = LEADER. Obama = SELLOUT. Doyle = AWESOME. Lol.

I don't know if online poker is rigged or not. I think in the case of Full Tilt I question the variance based on my experience. Is that empirical proof, nope. I rarely play there anymore. I don't get the same results on Pokerstars which is why I'm playing there primarily. I know this, poker doesn't need another scandal and now it has one, then add the robbery in Germany and its a bad PR week brewing.

HA! Glad the church is there to tell you what to do; zz's statement is the ultimate hypocrisy. Let the conservatives continue to allow you to do whatever you want because it's 'not the governments job', yet they'll increase drug penalties, put religion in schools, and take away your freedoms as they see fit in the name of national security. But that's okay, soon I'll be able to buy as many handguns as I want per month in Virginia as the Repub Guvna looking to repeal the 1 handgun a month rule. politics and religion are a joke.
