Mr. Clemens Goes To Washingtonby Roy Winston | Published: Aug 30, '10 |
So Roger Clemens is off to DC to answer charges for lying during the Mitchell investigation, where he now faces up to 30 years in prison. Kind of funny actually, any reasonable person had to know he was on steroids and or HGH, and all he had to do was admit it and it wouldn’t have been a big deal, but making false statements under oath, well that’s a big deal, unless of course you are a president, then no big deal. After all Martha Stewart went to prison for lying under oath, not any of the things she was originally accused of doing.
What I find really sad is at a time when all kinds of bad stuff is happening in the world, and right here at home, our elected representatives focus their attention on performance enhancing drugs in professional sports. You would think there were much bigger issues on their plates.
Now back to poker, I am playing online mostly over the next couple of weeks, then off to Borgata for there upcoming series which features a $3,500 WPT main event, which attracted over 1,000 players last year. I have a few charity events coming up in NY City, which I will get into later.

this rarely happens, but...i totally agree.
unbelievable that tax dollars are being wasted on investigating meaningless athletes playing a meaningless sport. Why not focus on the fact that Chase and Citibank are allowed to charge american families 30% interest on their credit cards? Our government is total sham.

There is a lot of emphasis on "more important" issues by the government including a ton of scrutiny on the credit card companies lately. Are you saying that since you perceive something to be a bigger issue, that all focus should be on that issue and all other "less important" problems should be ignored? The amount of time spent by Congress on performance enhancing drug use is negligible compared to the time they invest on issues such as impropriety by the credit card industry. The only reason you think that their focus is on the PED use is that the hearings involved testimony from famous athletes and have been shown on a loop for the past three years. The focus of the congressional investigation into PED use is and always has been a public safety issue on the use of these sorts of substances by athletes (and citizens) at every level of sport. Personally, I don't see this as a waste of time or resources. Now the amount of time and effort invested by the media on this issue compared to the time they spend on some more important issues, that is certainly something one could take issue with.

Lets not forget...
This entire situation stems from a "Report" that was written by a member of the Boston Red Sox organization, that had no oversight, and was not edited before made public. This "report" was financed by MLB,(25 million budget) yet they chose someone who was a member of a baseball organization to write it. Miraculously, the team that employed this man, happened to be the only team that did not have a big time star purported to be on steroids or HGH while playing for the team. In addition, their bitter rivals, had around a dozen players implicated.
Basically, "hearsay" was the entire reason he is going to prison. Forget the fact that he perjured himself...there was no reason for him to even be there in the first place, other than someone "thinking" that he did steroids.
I am not an apologist on perjury, nor on Steroids...especially not on steroids, but you cant help but think this is a witch hunt in the highest degree. Im not saying they meant to get CLEMENS, per se...but they meant to get SOMEONE. He was just prideful enough, or stupid enough to fall for it.

If you looked at it from the perspective that thousands of young people now think steriods are great, maybe you would think it's more important. When all these young people are destroying their bodies to be like fat head Clemons and Bonds and potentially having roid rages/committing suicide, it is more important. It is sad that it couldn't be handled in some other capacity but it hasn't been. I hate politics but I also hate when people have this take: Something is horrible and gov't should get involved.....then they do.....and now they shouldn't have gotten involved. You can't have it both ways.

Martha Stewart is of no relevance to Clemens, Washington, steroids or "lying under oath." The state expert witness lied under oath in her kangaroo court trial; the stealth juror who crowed "victory for the little guys" lied under oath. Martha Stewart did no "lying under oath." That's a lie by Winston. She was never under oath at any time, and not one word spoken by her or any Bush goon was recorded in a transcript or in sworn testimony.
The criminal justice system was abused and misused on her for political gain. "Martha Stewart went to prison" because of grossly incompetent legal representation that enabled, aided, and abetted bogus charges against her.
She made a small-time, legal, personal stock sale and owed nobody any explanation, including the Bush goons.

Roger Clemens is going to jail for one reason and one reason only. Arrogance. He was NOT issued a subpoena yet he chose to voluntarily attend the hearings and lie through his teeth to the most powerful legislative body in the world. Now they will be forced to make an example of him unless he does the smart thing and accepts a plea deal admitting he "misremembered" his steroids abuse. The government will drag every low life he ever dealt with into court in addition to teammates and Mindy McCready to prove their case. Today he's still the defiant, arrogant, ass wipe he always was. Tomorrow,if he's smart(and there's precious little evidence of that.) he'll cop a plea, burst into tears and tell us how God and his family will get him through this. If not, he'll go to jail.Because the only people more arrogant than Roger Clemens is the U.S. Government.
