Scotty was born Thuan Nguyen in Vietnam on Oct. 28, 1962. At the ripe old age of 14, he boarded a ship and sailed to the United States. At the suggestion of an employer, Thuan decided to go by the name Scotty, because it was easier to pronounce.
Along with the main-event win, he has cashed in more than 100 major tournaments. He has won four other WSOP bracelets, including the 1997 Omaha eight-or-better, 2001 pot-limit Omaha, 2001 Omaha eight-or-better, and the 2008 $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event, dubbed the Players Championship. Nguyen also won the 2006 WPT World Poker Open.
Nguyen made a run at a second main-event bracelet in 2007, finishing 11th for $476,926.
