All In for Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort
University of Arkansas
The overwhelming generosity and support of U.S. residents from all over the nation has helped raise millions of dollars in relief aid for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Everyone seems to be getting involved in one way or another. College students and poker players are no exception.
Many online poker rooms have done their part. PartyPoker, PokerStars, and FullTiltPoker have held special charity tournaments in which the majority of the prize pool got donated to the hurricane relief effort, usually through the American Red Cross. PartyPoker donated 90 percent of the prize pool of its $30 + $0 tournament and matched the entire donation. FullTiltPoker held two $20 + $10 tournaments with the tournament fees and a matching donation going to the relief effort. PokerStars held the most tournaments, with four during a one-week span, which all sent 99 percent of the prize pool to help hurricane victims. These tournaments collectively raised well over $100,000.
The poker community at the University of Arkansas wasn't far behind. A charity Texas hold'em tournament was organized to raise money for the American Red Cross and the Hurricane Katrina relief effort at the university's Union Ballroom. The entry fee was a mere $10 minimum donation, affordable to even the smallest bankrolls.
The tournament offered a genuine casino environment, courtesy of an entertainment company that specializes in casino gaming parties. Each table featured an experienced dealer in uniform and players were offered complimentary food to fuel up for the tournament.
At 8 p.m., the action began, with almost 200 players dispersed more than 25 poker tables in the ballroom. Mayhem ensued, with loud all ins, devastating turns and rivers, and exciting races. Many players left sharing their bad-beat stories on their way out of the ballroom with the spectators watching the event. In less than four hours of play, the field was narrowed down to the final table. By midnight, the champion eliminated his final-table competition to take home the first place prize. Taylor White, the evening's champion, pocketed an $800 prize for his efforts that night at the Union Ballroom.
This was the second in a series of charity tournaments at the University of Arkansas. Last semester, a similar tournament was held to raise funds for the tsunami relief effort, and next semester plans suggest another tournament with an even higher turnout.
