Vegas is Getting HOT
The temperature here in Las Vegas is awesome. For eight months out of the year, it is about as pleasant outside as you could ask. No jackets necessary, shorts optional. May, June, July, and August are a different story altogether. It gets hot, and when I say hot, I mean hit-you-in-the-face-and-take-your-breath-away hot. Luckily, this same time period provides poker players and fans the opportunity to spend most of their time indoors, doing what they enjoy most.
For poker action, this is by far the hottest time of year for players and fans alike. The World Poker Tour has just crowned its newest world champion, Joe Bartholdi, who is living proof that a grinder's dream can come true. There are currently two major tournament series going on here in Vegas: the World Series of Poker Tournament Circuit at Caesars and the Mirage Poker Showdown, a WPT event. A third event, the newest stop on the WPT, will take place at Mandalay Bay on June 4-8. Then the granddaddy of 'em all, the World Series of Poker, begins on June 25 and doesn't quit until Aug. 10.
With all this poker activity happening in a five-square-mile radius in a period of four months, Vegas has once again officially become the center of the poker universe. The town is swelling with the presence and dreams of thousands of players, and even the smallest of poker rooms are filling to capacity. It is truly a sight to behold.
On the collegiate front, you guys are putting up huge numbers. Nineteen-year-old University of Georgia student Jeff Williams recently won the EPT Grand Final for more than $1 million. At the WPT Foxwoods Poker Classic, Alex Jacob finished second to Victor Ramdin and collected more than $650,000. And 22-year-old Iowa State student Mike Schneider became the youngest PartyPoker Million champ ever, winning $1 million on the PartyPoker Million V cruise.
I've said this before, but it's worth repeating: You, the collegiate poker players, are the future of poker. With all the resources available to your generation of poker players, I see no end to the string of enormous cashes and first-place finishes by college students. I hope you have a wonderful summer, play a ton of poker, and come back to school in the fall with monster bankrolls and renewed passion for whatever educational path you've chosen. From Card Player College, congratulations on finishing another year of school, and we'll see you in the fall!
